Snow and high wind issues for areas near and north of M-43 / M-59 and deep into northern lower Michigan are definitely appearing more significant than when I made my last post on this thread. Metro Detroit won't see as much snow but will still be susceptible to high winds.

Aside from travel hazards, I am definitely worried about power outage risk as we head into a multi-day stretch of very cold temperatures (15 to 20 degrees below normal). Much of Michigan will see subzero temperatures at night this coming week for at least a couple days.

My thoughts regarding snow totals can be found here:

Blizzard warning now in effect for NE lower Michigan, also including Otsego and Crawford counties.

I suspect more counties will go under blizzard warnings by this evening or overnight.

My snowfall total predictions in the other thread largely remain on target, I think. Some of the areas where I predicted 5 to 8 inches probably need to be bumped up to 7 to 10 inches, including Kalamazoo, Traverse City and Petoskey.

NWS thinks 8 to 13 inches for those places. 10 to 15 in the blizzard warning with 18 locally. 55mph winds and it goes until 7pm Saturday! Incredible storm. I’m glad it’s north of us!

Do buses drive with blizzard warnings?

We used to go all the time… then a couple years ago insurance rates went way way up and we don’t even run for a winter storm warning now. Different places may do it differently.

I'm skeptical that 12+ inch totals will be as widespread as the NWS is touting (not counting lake effect snow to follow later in the weekend).

Totals of 3 to 6 inches were pretty common across Detroit's western and northern suburbs. Snow showers and squalls over the next 24 hours will likely drop another 1 to 3 inches region wide. There is a mid-level disturbance over Lake Michigan that will drift Eastward throughout the day and will bring some organized snowfall to the region.

The Grand Rapids area had received between 4 and 7 inches as of roughly 10 PM last night, but a mid level disturbance overnight and early this morning has helped crank up the lake effect machine. By this afternoon, I expect many areas over there will have seen 10 or more inches of total accumulation.

Totals in much of northern lower appear to have underachieved predictions. Not many snowfall reports have been filed yet from there. Radar imagery was fascinating late last evening as the moisture column appeared to rapidly fade with this system.

A rapidly developing low near Philadelphia has helped rob moisture from the original low pressure center, which is now centered near Goderich, Ontario.

It's just been a pleasant snowfall all night without much wind on the West side. Maybe 6" since 2p yesterday at my house, closer to 10" in the snowbelts.

Biggest snowfall report I've seen so far is 15 inches in West Branch.

7 to 10 inch totals are fairly common across interior northern lower and also the Grand Rapids area.

Far as I can tell, we have about 6-8 here eyeballed, but it was wet and condensed and all that shit.

Snow in Michigan is like that first piss when you're drunk. As soon as you break the seal, it's happening every 15 minutes.

No school tomorrow for Dr. King.
I'm thinking no school Tuesday and Wednesday.

I don't know where you are, but unless it snows 6" with gusts to 30mph, schools will be open in my area.

I guess you forgot that Queen Whitmer likes to close down the state, including all schools, universities, and even the post office, when it gets cold outside. This from the year before Covid hit:

I agree with her. Those are life threatening conditions. When I lived in Aspen, they closed the entire mountain for conditions like that.
The National Weather Service says the extreme cold will last into Thursday. Wind chill factors of minus 40 degrees (negative 40 degree Celsius) can quickly lead to frostbite.
