Eh, it didn't happen that quickly. Plasma flat-screen TVs were introduced 25 years ago, in 1997. They quickly earned a reputation for very high energy usage and poor longevity.
It wasn't until LCD TVs became affordable and plentiful that CRT sets finally faded away. By then, they tended to be very basic and cost much less than a flat-screen; they didn't languish around in the stores for long. it was the higher-end Plasma flat-screen sets that went unsold.
