Well, among the new vehicles that are of interest to me, we can scratch the 2023 Honda HR-V off the list.

I learned yesterday that its 0 to 60 time is an anemic 10.9 seconds. Not surprising given its dinky 2.0L naturally aspirated engine. That size engine, which reportedly produces only 140 lb feet of torque, might work fine in a compact sedan such as the Civic but is grossly underpowered for the new generation HR-V, which is almost the same length as the RAV4.

Only 140? That engine would be very REV happy...

Bear in mind, too, that it is mated to a continuously variable transmission!

If a hybrid version is released, it will be interesting to see by how much the 0 to 60 time improves.

The all-gas version of the Corolla Cross, which is a shorter vehicle than the new HR-V yet is regarded as a direct competitor, averages in the mid 9-second range, which is definitely slow but far from awful for the subcompact class. The hybrid version of the Corolla Cross, with 194 combined HP, fares much better - averaging near or just above 8 seconds.

If they really wanted to make it a cool and desirable hybrid, they'd junk that CVT idea (and any transmission), shrink the gas engine to around 60-80HP and bolt a high voltage DC generator to it. Then, bolt in a 150-200kW motor and a 30-40kW battery pack.

You'd have VERY respectable 0-60 performance, great economy, and the ability to run "all electric" for the majority of daily driving. You could still drive non-stop across the country (well, just stopping to refill the gas tank).

Quick update on the 2023 Honda HR-V:
the "official" 0 to 60 time is 9.5 seconds.

That 10.9 second score was measured in the mountains of Washington state.

Ford must be following in Hyundai's footsteps:
