Tonight's meteor storm

Post by bmw » Mon May 30, 2022 10:05 pm

Anybody going to watch it? Scientists are saying it will either be the most spectacular meteor storm since the mid-1960s with a meteor zipping through the sky every 4 seconds or so (up to 1,000 per hour), or that it could be a total dud.

Start time is estimated to be somewhere between 12:45 and 1:15 AM tonight. Unknown how long it will last, but that it should be most active for about 45 minutes, if it happens.

At least where I'm at, the skies are clear at the moment.

I'm usually going to bed around 1:00. Tonight I might step out the back door for a minute before I do. Would it be visible here in the city, with so much light pollution?

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it.

From what I've read, some of the brighter meteors should be visible even in a moderately lit up city sky. Though I imagine tonight's heat and humidity won't help.

Should I wear my hard hat?

Nope, zero risk of anything actually reaching the ground. The meteor shower is going to be caused by a comet that broke up in 1995. The earth will be traveling through what is nothing more than a big cloud of dust. But even all those specs of dust can make visible light in the sky as they burn up in the atmosphere.

About 12:00 went out into the driveway for about 5 minutes. Didn't see anything.

About 12:30 I made a drink and went out and sat on the patio and sat with my head back. I still didn't see anything, but it's a good position for drinking. Now it's almost one and I'm making another drink to take out (Just in the interest of science). I'll report on Tuesday.

This is either a total bust or the storm is later than predicted. So far I haven't seen anything yet either. There was uncertainty in the exact timing.

Years ago, when I was a kid, a meteor shower was predicted for one evening. Our dad took us outside and it was a real show.
