I first heard of this practice close to 10 years ago when a work associate's very early adolescent daughter told her mother she was bored with vanilla sex and was now into choking. Her mother asked us if we had ever heard of such a thing. The only thing we had heard of at the time was "accidental" asphyxia hangings occurring on college campuses, and that there had been a death recently at MSU.

I had a friend at MSU (1977!) who died of this. State News came out with a story about it, saying it was not a suicide but he was found hanging in a shower. Nobody had ever heard of such a thing, so me and some other friends of his pressed, and they eventually did a big "expose" about it. Crazy.
