Vanity

They say vanity is a sin. Whether it's a sin or not, I know it's dumb for someone my age. I've long ago accepted there is nothing I can ever do that will make me look good again.
So I generally go around these days looking rumpled and disheveled. Except for my one remaining vanity. My shoes.
I grew up in a poor family. Our Dad, who was exmilitary, used to always say "It doesn't matter of your clothes are old, worn out or patched, as long as you shine your shoes every day, you'll look OK."
His advice has served me well over the years and I still always shine my shoes.
