Ash Wednesday again. When all the phonies in town who otherwise would never darken the door of a church go in to get that smudge of dirt on their foreheads and wear it around all day like a badge of piety.

Should just use boot polish. It would save them a trip to the church and they might get two or three days wear out of it instead of just one.

We live in an age when a person’s reputation can be ruined if it’s revealed they were seen in black face thirty years ago. Yet, we celebrate this masquerade of holiness every year,

The Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit is telling the "faithful" they are getting ashes sprinkled on them instead of smeared due to COVID.

This year's masquerade of holiness will be a bad-looking case of dandruff.

With today's technology, it should be possible to develop and mass produce halos. There would be a market for them among the Ash Wednesday crowd.

My understanding is that the sprinkling of ashes on the crown of the head is the original method of distribution dating back to the early Church. The marking of ashes on the forehead came along later.

Being Catholic, scattering won't be an option for me. Although cremation has been allowed for Catholics since Vatican II, Church doctrine maintains that the remains must be interred.

That being said, I plan to be cremated when the time comes.

I was raised in the Catholic Church, but I lost the faith years ago.

My last day as identifying as Catholic was the Sunday mass where the priest told the congregation that we couldn't pick and choose which of the rules we liked and still be Catholic.

Starting with my decision years earlier to have a vasectomy (and going down a long list of things I disagreed with church doctrine on), I realized the guy was 100% correct. Presto, Catholic guilt gone and discovering much more healthy outlets for my spiritual life was on.

I thank that priest all the time for the best homily ever.
