Us old timers also remember a Chesterfield as a cigarette.

Which means a Chesterfield was also called a fag on the other side of the big pond.

OK. That was bad. I've done what I can to fix it.

I always thought it had to do with the name of the country:

C, eh?...N, eh?...D, eh? :razz

As for why southerners say y'all:

I've never heard anyone say oot or aboot.. Hydro is a holdover from the last century, when most electricity in Ontario was hydroelectric.

Loonie is just a nickname, just as your dollar is sometimes referred to as a greenback.

Looking at a property in Florida once, the seller was puzzled when I mentioned something about eave troughs. The term they use there is gutters.

Been to NS and NF.

The Newfies have a unique accent. Sounds a little like Irish.

In Florida once I met a woman who was some kind of professor of linguistics. She said the Canadian accent was very similar to the Wisconsin accent. I've never been to Wisconsin.

I've noticed one thing we say differently. We say roof. Americans pronounce it ruff.

I think it's closer to Minnesota accent, eh!

I have spent weeks in NF, NS and NB with the locals. Oot and aboot, are common.

Must be a Florida thing, it's roof around here.

The people from NF have some odd colloquialisms I had to meet with a guy at his home but I couldn't find my way. I called him for directions. He asked me where I was and I told him. He said "Stay where you're to, and I'll come and get you..

There'a mild oath that they utter "Lard tunderin Jaysus" (Lord thundering Jesus.)

A: We open the windows and it smells like money, eh...

LOL
