Canadian Club is my regular everyday whisky. I keep a bottle of Crown Royal for special guests. It's been sitting, unopened, in the cabinet since 1996.

I wish I could post a pic, but I opened a bottle of 1959 Canadian masterpiece about 2 hours ago, I hate to waste it, but being in lockdown and all I figured there would probably never be a better time. I’ll save the red leather box for marbles or something. I raise my glass to you all.

I'm a bourbon drinker. Have been for over 30 years. While the rest of the world was drinking "white" I was drinking "brown". To my chagrin, "brown" is all the rage these days and it has driven bourbon prices a lot higher than they used to be.

Except for occasional sampling of specialty bourbon's, my go to, every day bourbon, is Woodford Reserve. Although I do enjoy it up or on the rocks now and again, the vast majority of the time it will be used in an Old Fashioned or Manhattan. And of course in a Mint Julep for Kentucky Derby weekend. These are a couple I made May 2nd. Just because they postponed the Derby, I saw no reason to postpone our yearly Mint Julep.



About ten years ago or so, I discovered the joy of various liqueurs. I really love a good cup of coffee after dinner and adding the right liqueur makes it a dessert like experience for me. Depending on the meal, here are a few of my favorites to use as a digestif .

B&B (My Favorite) - After a great steak, in a snifter, with a cup of coffee and a cigar.
Sambuca - After a hearty red sauce dish served with espresso.
Grand Marnier - Great after a meal featuring fish. I even make a pan reduction sauce with it to serve with perch and walleye.
Cuarenta y Tres - This is quite sweet and does well over ice after a hot or spicy dish. Poured over Orange Sherbet, it brings back memories of the "Orange Sickle" we used to have as kids.

I've seen this before but haven't tried it yet. I take that it is excellent?

I just tried Crown Royal from the samples I bought yesterday. It was very good!

There are great burbons at Woodford's price point. Buffalo Trace is a contender.

I do enjoy Grand Marnier.

I most certainly will pick up a bottle to sample on my next trip to the libation emporium. For those of you in Taylor, that's a liquor store.

But, I think Woodford Reserve should be classified as a great bourbon. Much better than many.

You don't need that many square feet. I know of a little store in Livonia, Michigan that has every single liquor that is allowed to be sold in the state of Michigan. The owner, Louis, is beyond cool and very knowledgeable. He will always steer you in the right direction. I travel considerably out of my way just to shop with him. The Brass Mug, Seven mile and Newburgh Rd. Just north of the Speedway.

While your at it, if making a trip, stop into the Holiday Market in Canton, MI. I live a little more than a half an hour away from there and make a trip once a month. It's not grocery shopping, it's an experience.

Side Note....

When making strawberry shortcake this year, drizzle a little Grand Marnier on the berries before you add the sugar and mash them. You'll never do strawberry shortcake without the Grand Marnier again.

Total Wine stores in Florida average 25,000 sq ft. Each Total Wine store carries approximately 8,000 different wines from around the world, 3,000 types of spirits, and 2,500 beers.

ABC Fine Wine & Spirits locations average around 13000 sq ft and have more than 500 beers, 5,000 wines, 2,000 spirits and 400 cigars, in addition to gourmet foods, custom gift baskets, glassware and other related items.

The first one is more where I’m going... every kind of beer and liquor in every flavor available...

My typical purchase at Total Wine is 24 cans of PBR and a 60 oz bottle of CC.
