CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Cape Coral police arrested a North Fort Myers man after he jumped in a canal, taking off from a traffic stop.
Just before 1 a.m. Tuesday, Shawn Gilligan ran a stop sign. An officer tried to pull him over, but Gilligan tried speeding away, according to police.
Gilligan made a turn onto a dead-end road, stopped in a driveway off the 1100 block of NE 6th Avenue, then ran out of his Jeep and jumped into a canal to get away from the officer.
Gilligan was taken into custody and arrested on the other side of the canal.
Investigators could smell a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. Gilligan was transported to a local hospital because he was unresponsive and complained of injuries, according to police.
Gilligan is facing several criminal charges including fleeing and eluding, driving with a suspended license and resisting an officer.
Cape Coral is 547 miles from Niceville.
