The forests up there must be made of plastic, 'cuz the CA smoke smells like burning plastic once it gets here.
According to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (Michigan EGLE), wood fires like the ones in Canada emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs)—what people generally know as the campfire smell. But when exposed to sunlight, they break down, meaning that by the time the smoke reaches West Virginia, the campfire smell is gone. But the fires also release VOCs like benzene, formaldehyde and acrolein, according to the Michigan EGLE, which breaks down more slowly. These compounds are likely the “plastic-y” smells being reported. The EGLE also said that these smells can last for a few days after the fire.

Thanks for digging up and posting the explanation for a rather odoriferous series of events, beemer.

Traveling to NW WI this weekend, I'm hoping for less of that CA "experience" in the Fence Lake area.

We just got through the surreal world of covid, and now this. Is normal gone for good?
yes. It was funny for the few years when people thought the salvation of Flint, Toledo, Youngstown and Huntington was going to be Californians fleeing in search of fresh air and water, though.

Just when I was getting used to some nice clean air the past week and a half, the smoke is coming back full-force. Wonderful. This time seemingly from the fires burning in the western part of Canada.

I think it's just supposed to blow through and be gone by morning.

For those of us who can barely breathe when the air quality is like it is right now, I have a suggestion. Eat spicy food. Its helped to open up the airways for me a bit and helped with the headaches. The smoke on Tuesday was ridiculous and I really hope this doesn't become normal.
I will keep this mind when this happens again this summer. Notice I said when...

Took you long enough to make a reply...
Shall I look for your next reply, say in early September?
