Detroit Underground Radio 1967 - 1972

Does anyone have any history info on underground rock in Detroit during that era. I’m interested in stations and personalities, I know it was short lived and I was just a kid in 6th grade in 1967 and was more tuned in to AM radio even in my teen years I didn’t get into FM until after I graduated in 1973.

I remember them all, subtle variations of the "Underground" format, but often secretly tightly formatted behind the scenes, so basically a ruse. There were CJOM, WABX, WKNR-FM, WXYZ-FM/WRIF, and WWWW, and I was able to hear them in Genesee County, with a turnstile outside antenna, or a sensitive and selective radio with just the telescoping whip. I started listening to WKNR-FM and WXYZ-FM when they simulcast WKNR and WXYZ Top 40 formats. It wasn't as good as it has been idealized. For one thing, the DJs kept playing things that they weren't authorized to play, and some were Carlinesque obscene/FCC rule violations. The personalities would sometimes go into obscenity laced rants. They were often gone the next day. Every Day some kids would come to school and say, "hey did you hear what so and so did on W*** last night? And "Joe Stevens" is gone today!"

An incomplete and often inaccurate list is at this link. Underground stations rarely had playlist surveys, so ARSA isn't of much use.

I remember in 1970 we just moved in to Southgate I was only 14 at the time and the hippie neighbor and his hot wife always had the windows open and had WKNR-FM blasting the tunes from C.C.R., Zeppelin, Mountain, Spirit, Moby Grape and of course the late great Uncle Russ Gibb, even though I didn’t have an FM radio my hippie neighbors turned me on to WKNR-FM 100 “The Underground Station”.

This one was excellent.

"8:05" Moby Grape

WTRX AM 1330 Flint broke "8:05" first. Moby Grape had released their entire album on five singles.

Absoutely a great radio station. John Records Landecker had his first Top 40 gig there in 1966, as "Dow Jones", one of the Jones Boys, Nights, Fill ins, and Weekends. WTRX couldn't compete with WTAC though, which had a lot more ad revenue, and they went to a young AC in 1968. I think they called the train next to the station that went though and could be heard over the air when the mikes were open, the "8:05".

On another slight memory of that underground era, I kinda remember WXYZ-FM did some sort of thing called Love Radio or Love FM with some dude named Brother John. Anyone have any idea of that?

Here's a WABX lineup from 1968.

This one is much easier to read.

So Fleetwood Mac had TWO albums named "Fleetwood Mac"?
