Apollo 11

Post by sfpcc » Tue Jul 16, 2019 10:47 pm

This week a major topic in the news is the 50th anniversary of the Moon Landing, (close to the point of overkill but not quite, maybe that's for another thread.) Does anyone out there remember to initial coverage of the event? I was born in 1967 so I have no memory of the event.

One of the only things I remember when I was 4 is getting a Spinal Tap.

I watched the takeoff(and perhaps the moon landing; my memories are fuzzy after a half-century) from a hospital bed. I spent almost all of summer vacation that year either hospitalized for leg and foot surgeries or recovering from them.

I remember it quite vividly watching in the family room -- Walter Cronkite choking up with amazement, as did probably more than half the world with access to a television. It was quite the follow-up to the Tigers winning the World Series the previous year -- at age 13 all things were possible! :hat

I remember that Sunday evening. It seemed like it took forever for them to get out once they were down. It was like 10 pm before they did the hop about. The next day we did lunch at the usual spot. (Sportsman's Tavern in A2) and it happened to be the same time of the lift off to come back. Not a sound could be heard except the TV. When they got off, a big cheer went up. Then the place emptied since we were all late to get back to work.

A friend of mine did work for NASA and got a trip to the HQ later and met Armstrong. My friend was given a tour by the Neil and one of the stops was the LEM simulator. Neil gave him a quick lesson on how to land and the guest crashed 5 out of 5 attempts. Then still chatting Neil landed the simulated craft without a even looking at the instruments. Armstrong explained that the daily schedule had a window of practice or physical exercise. He then said he didn't like doing physical workouts.
