General Detroit Movie Thread.

Post by sfpcc » Mon Jan 07, 2019 7:11 pm

I know I've brought this up in other ways before, but it's a new year and their seems to be some new folks on this board. Does anyone out there have any memories about watching old movies, (or any movies) on Detroit TV? This could include Bill Kennedy, Rita Bell, those films the old sixty 62 showed overnight, Channel 7's sliced up version of Abbott And Costello, I could go on.

Not so much old movies, but when I worked in Detroit for a short time in The 80’s, I do remember Channel 62 WGPR showing some really strange European Films, that had mild nudity which in the 80’s were considered R rated they aired them after Midnight and 62 would show the same dozen or so Movies night after night, the thing that cracked me up they had religious programming just before these movies would air, I don’t know how long they did this in the 80’s because I started a radio gig in Chicago at WXRT around 1984.

I always kind of wished I'd seen more of those weird films but they were on too late for me. I remember around 96/97 WADL had a movie program at 5pm that showed similar grainy 70's films. I just saw a film on TCM called Villain that could have been on those programs. That might have led me to start this thread, (I watch a lot of TCM.)

Bill Kennedy was a bit actor before hosting CKLW's "Bill Kennedy's Showtime" in my youth. His theme song was pop standard "Just In Time."
I was a kid then,but Rita Bell,who hosted "Rita Bell's Prize Movie," was a buxom lass !!!!!

Rita Bell also did Starlet Stairway featuring all kinds of kid acts like baton twirling and tap dancing.
Yes, Some of the late late movies on 62 were racy for the time and not scrambled like the 'pay' channel 20.

Does anyone remember the early 70's Sunday night, French Canadian porn on channel 22?
Usually after 10pm and had that made on the cheap look.

I remember that Channel 78 CBEFT was the French Canadian Channel. I was hard to get and I didn't watch it that often. I don't recall channel 22.

22 was the Global Network outlet in Windsor. What also set Global apart was the way they would cover big international stories. After giving their report, the news reader would give a lead in, "Here is how the U.S. views the same story."

It was CBEFT Channel 78 (Yes, There were 5 Call letters and don’t really know why maybe someone on the board has an answer)I used to watch them quite a bit around 1974 or there about, The Canadian Government or I should say The CRTC allowed nudity on Television even way back then, There were tons of French Movies on Channel 78 which was also owned by The CBC, And I would get 78 clear as Channel 9 back then with an outdoor antenna.

In the '60s Channel 7 had their late afternoon Big Movie, later called the Big Show. It was 90 minutes from 4:30 - 6:00, so with commercials the movies were edited down to afterthoughts, but this kid didn't much care. :razz A lot of old war movies and classic creature features.

There was also Channel 9's Million Dollar Movie on weekends hosted by blue-blooded Mary Morgan and her little lap dog.

Channel 22/29 never any porn, It was only on TV 78 and it really wasn’t porn it was basically Soft ”R” Rated movies your basic topless Lady scene if you blinked you would miss it. I remember when I was dating my first Wife we would watch one of those movies and always laugh at it because the nudity was so quick.

I was watching once, when a caller asked a guest on Bill Kennedy's Show, "Don't you think Bill Kennedy is an asshole?"

According to Wikipedia CBEFT was a satellite of CBFT out of Montreal. Satellite or repeater stations usually have call signs longer than four letters.
(I don't have a broadcasting background so I might be wrong.)

No, You’re right those Canadian rules that the CRTC has are weird the set up for call letters are hard to understand, Along with their accent, My Wife is from Windsor and still has her accent, You would think that after she has lived here for most of her life the Eh! thing would have disappeared but she still has it just picture a Canasian girl saying Eh! in every sentence but it’s kind of cute. But thanks for the info.

i remember Mary Morgan and her dog, was on channel 9 in the 50's and 60's...i think, can't remember if she was on before or after Bill Kennedy. also remember when channel 2 ran old movies late at night back in the 70's and/or the 80's.
also seems like abc started 'Saturday night at the movies' in the early 60's
