Post by Deleted User 14803 » Tue Dec 11, 2018 1:40 pm

This radio station brings back memories from the late 60’s and 70’s to me they were an alternative to the Big 8 when CK was running commercials sets, I would tune in to Radio 7 on many occasions because of the large amount of Can-Con ,CHYR turned me on to a lot More Canadian talent,Radio 7 CHYR had good personalities as well but the one guy I do remember is Chuck Reynolds is he still doing radio?Anyways what do you remember about CHYR?

CHYR (CHIR after sunset pattern and frequency change) to me always had a bit too much reverb on the live DJ mics.
Wasn’t it at one time CJSP (from Leamington, in Canada's "Sun Parlour," the Tomato capital!)?

Yes, they were CJSP but don’t know when the calls changed and when they Were CJSP I do believe they were daytime only.

CHYR / CHIR was at one time owned by Sun Parlour Broadcasting. In the daytime they were very listenable all the way to Port Austin. At night, with Blue Jays games, very DX when I lived in Flint. At pattern / freq adjustment time day to night during Jays games I heard everything that could go wrong happen (leave the air and return on day power, return on night power but only after another try, leave the air and not return at all) more than once. The announcement was: "CHYR pauses for pattern and frequency change. Allow at least ten seconds of silence for necessary technical adjustments. Now turn your dial to 730 (or 710 if it was at sunrise) and wait for this sound (the sound effect they used, it changed every now and then) to return." They'd go off, come back, and the anncr would say "now you're back on the beam with CHYR (even at night when they became CHIR on 730), a division of Rogers Radio Limited" (this after 1978 when they had Jays games).

Jocks I remember c 1969-70 were Ken Curtis, Craig Cole, Dave Dawson. It's also where I heard The Ketchup Song by Stompin Tom Connors. One of the characters in it is a girl from Leamington, where at the time Heinz operated a ketchup factory, whose BF was from PEI where potatoes grew. They played it so often that I thought it was a song either recorded by a local band or commissioned by CHYR (not unlike the My Home Town PAMS jingle).

Edited from History of Canadian Broadcasting site.

CJSP 710 became CHYR ("Cheer") on June 26, 1967. A License to operate the station at night-time, as CHIR on 730 kHz was issued August 2. Power was 10000 watts Day and 250 watts Night.

From what I heard, a famous Michigan Radio Archivist complained to the FCC when they first moved to 710 at Night about interference to WLW 700 . CHYR had to move back to 730 Nights temporarily. That was part of what they argued to the CRTC to get them to approve the move to FM 96.7, with what was then the most restricted FM allotment in Canada up to that time. There were something like nine limitations in the original pattern from the original CJSP Pelee Gateway Tower Site, in the heart of the Sun Parlour-make sure you spell it the British Way. I think they finally got it approved on 710 at Night because they changed the skywave calculation in the Treaty for WOR 710.

WOR continues to protect the phantom Leamington 710 allotment under the Treaty. As do plenty of other US stations that protect phantom Canadian allotments, including WWJ, WFDF, and WTCM. WYLL had to reduce their power to 5 kW Night from Des Plaines, until they swapped out 1170 for 1160 in Thunder Bay, which as far as I know, was never occupied. WYLL also had to upgrade WHBY 1150 Kimberly to 20 kW-D, 25 kW-N, DA-2. WHBY is now heard frequently on scores of Software Tuned Remotely Controlled Internet Radios in the Arctic.

Thanks for the compliment. I really did have a stash of electronics catalogs, but stacked neatly in the closet. We had a really good electronics store in Flint called Radio Tube Merchandising Company. The first thing I built, I bought the parts there. I think Radio Shack basically put the Mom and Pop Electronics Stores out of business. And now they are all but gone.

CHIR 730 later became CHYR-7 730.

Here's a DX recording of CHYR-7 from Philadelphia.

Remember when CHYR had the "CHYR Mometer"? WTRX had the "TRXometer". WTAC had the "TACometer". My father explained to me what a tachometer really was, when he heard them give the Weather circa 1963. I think of him every time I look at the tachometer on my Buick.

Anyone remember any other radio station "-ometers"?

WPAG-AM in Ann Arbor had a jingle, I assume was from the 1960’s, mentioning the WPAG “Weather-ometer”.

I remember listening to CHYR up in the Tri Cities back in the 70's during the daytime, they had a real good ground wave to the north at that time.

Does the Wittle-ometer still exist on WITL-FM in Lansing?

Which Canadian station also broadcast on shortwave, I think 6030 kHz?

Edit: It was 6070 kHz. CFRX. There was a 6030 too, at one time, I think from Calgary.
