August 16-22 Tropo Summary

Post by cckadlec » Wed Aug 30, 2023 11:33 pm

Here is a summary of the massive tropo event of August 16 and August 19-22 as heard here in Fremont. Equipment includes a portable Grundig G8 with an attached voice recorder; every piece of equipment is currently broken in one way or another and in desperate need of replacement. All catches are live, manual DXing on my feet with no SDRs, autologgers, or additional technology. This was a once-in-a-lifetime tropo event as even the most experienced and oldest DXers could admit, so I'm happy I was a part of it.

Image

There was a strong tropo duct ahead of a cold front on the night of the 16th, triggering 800+ mile tropo for those involved with paths from Arkansas to Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. I got in on this rather late and reception appeared rather selective to those in lucky spots. I got little to nothing from this, but did take in a new tropo record of 670 miles, just miles from the Oklahoma border.

After a two-day break, tropo flared up once again on the morning of the 19th. While ducts were very widespread, I had only the St. Louis market through the morning and afternoon, as seems to be the norm, which persisted for at least ten hours with nothing else to be heard. As the evening hours arrived, St. Louis faded and Indianapolis and Columbus arrived, followed by a single Nashville catch for nearly an hour and one from Memphis. Catches were scattered in the hours following, but Appalachia began wandering in after midnight. I had my first ever Virginia catch, though on a technicality, the tower is one mile into Kentucky. This was later remedied for the fact WHAJ Bluefield, WV, heard nearly two days later, has a tower on the Virginia side of a street straddling the state line. Louisville, Indianapolis, and plenty of Ohio and Indiana stations were heard that night, and WSGS Hazard, KY appeared, staying in on and off like a semi-local for the following 48 hours.

Thinking this event had ended as tropo forecasts hardly showed a thing the whole week - at least not in such a widespread manner as was heard - I went to the beach for the afternoon on Sunday (no radio included) only to return home to all of the Twin Cities as well as some nearby stations in Eau Claire. As the evening continued, rural south, central, and west Minnesota stations would come in, many of them previously heard during the H*** opening of July 2018. Far western Minnesota and eastern South Dakota would be in before sunset, including a surprise strong reception of 96.5 The Walleye in Bismarck, the new standing record of 755 miles. The majority of this faded after midnight with a few popping up in the upcoming hours, but the eastern end of the duct into Ontario started bringing some stations in. Those in Niagara were hearing my locals and those just to my north into this duct at that time, but none into Niagara or the GTA here.

Monday morning brought intense Indiana and Ohio reception, strongest into Columbus, which had plenty of airtime during this event. Closer to sunset, Appalachia would return with strong signals from the Huntington, Beckley, and Charleston markets with strong conditions into the area just south of Chicagoland at the same time, an area that is rarely heard.

Tuesday morning was more strong Indiana and Ohio signals with the focus once again being on Columbus. I packed the car up for a two-day lake tropo trip to mobile radio sites (which was rained out in spectacular fashion) that morning, so listening at home was very limited. The same strong storm system moved this tropo event out of Michigan as it hung on to the west and south of this area.

As most have mentioning, this was perhaps the biggest tropo event of at least the past few decades with some chiming in that it was the biggest in 50 years in the hobby. I'm quite thrilled with the number and quality of stations received here given the lack of time I would usually have. Knowing it was rather historic, I stretched myself to the limit to find time to listen. My radio's dipole antenna is broken and four separate connections to my audio recorder had broken wires or faulty connections, so I have been listening and recording with very battered equipment (hopefully now somewhat repaired), but still with great results. It's hard to ask for much better than that. The total absence of stations in the direction of Kansas is quite notable. These regions are very common at my mobile sites closer to the water and it appears Lake Michigan played a villainous role in this with those out of the lake's shadow to my south easily hearing that part of the opening.

Stations received are listed in order of distance and include only those exceeding the 250-mile usual range of reception, though plenty very rare stations just shy of that threshold were also heard:

That is impressive! The best I was able to do in the RF hell that is my basement room in Grand Rapids was WCKY from Toledo and a handful of northern Michigan stations (WGFM, WSRT, WJZQ, WKLT, WCCW, and WGFE in addition to the much more common WTCM/WIAA/WOLW). Since WGVU turned off HD Radio a few months back, WIAA has become a semi-regular in parts of Grand Rapids.

Your reception of KBVA basically by itself brings back a couple of solo stations for me:
In 2015, I picked up 93.7 KRRL from Carroll, Iowa when nothing else west of I-39 was in.
In 2019 or 2020, I picked up 96.7 KCMQ from Columbia, Missouri when no other Missouri or Illinois stations were in.

It was certainly an impressive event indeed!

Then this morning when I really didn't have much chance to listen, I had a few more stations from Missouri, all in very strong. Conditions were very stable but long-distance catches were quite few and far between at the same time, which was great given the lack of time.

KQKL 95.3 Keokuk, IA (K-Love) at 360 miles
KATI 94.3 California, MO at 480 miles
KWTO 101.3 Springfield, MO at 569 miles

The K-Love is actually quite common here and easy to ID. That one was in the null of my WGVS local and KWTO was very easy to hear with Big 101.3 as a local. 101.3 stayed in all the way to Silver Lake Sand Dunes before dying as I went down the hill to the dunes.

It has been a good end of summer DXing!

I remember some openings in 1970 and around the late 1970s to early 1980s that were unusual. One in 1970 brought in all the VHF TV stations in Chicago in Genesee County, especially WLS-TV 7 and WTTW 11 with 316 kW from the Marina City transmitter area. Others were on Hancock with reduced ERP and noticeably weaker. One in late Summer like this revealed a lot of FMs in Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin in Southeast Michigan. One had FMs from every direction within 200 miles or so from Mecosta County, in 1978 from what was being played WWMM 92.7 Arlington Heights, IL.

Speaking of TV tropo, I miss being able to simply turn the VHF and UHF dials on my old tv w/rabbit ears during a tropo event (I was young and had no idea what tropo even was) and pick up stations on nearly every frequency.

Strangest reception I ever remember had to be in the early or mid 1990s, I remember one evening getting multiple Florida TV stations (here in Michigan) on UHF with very strong and stable reception that lasted for hours. And I remember they were Florida because they had weather watches and warnings with Florida maps on-screen.

Did you know the markets or particular stations?

How did the Toledo FM station get the same (long held) call sign as the Cinci AM with 50 kW ? I have seen only a fewinstances of this duplication in the US, very unusual.

I had an odd one this past Saturday night. I usually have no problem pulling in WJRT in southwestern St. Clair County, but instead found myself watching WINM out of Angola, IN.

Using the -FM suffix makes it a separate call sign. Pemberville is legally WCKY-FM.
Another example is WMGC. Detroit's 105.1 is WMGC-FM, because there is a WMGC(AM) in Tennessee.

That sure was another awesome tropo opening Friday night through Monday night!!! Even yesterday, those in Northern Michigan were still pulling in VA and NC, but it had moved just a tad out of reach for me Monday. Saturday and Sunday were all Roanoke, Greensboro, etc. 500 and 600-mile catches. Roanoke was in the entire night. WDCX Buffalo was in much of the day for two straight days. Star 104 in for 8 hours straight with a very decent signal. What a season so far. Those in Buffalo, Niagara, Toronto, and Rochester all pulling in VA and NC Sunday, then SC on Monday, then a friend pulled in southern Georgia, just shy of the Florida line last night when the big opening to the Carolinas combined with the Florida ducts. Just amazing stuff all around. Lacking some sleep here, but it was worth it. Not sure where everyone else's reports are from these events. These two have been once-in-a-lifetime ones for almost every DXer in the region. Perhaps because DX reports don't get much attention over industry-bashing on this board...?

I racked up some record logs myself. All are listed on fmlist.org. Glad to see you got in on it, Chris.
