90% Of World Population Lives Within 6 Miles Of Fresh Water

"Our results show that over 50% of the world's population lives closer than 3 km to a surface freshwater body, and only 10% of the population lives further than 10 km away."

This has implications for placement of transmitting towers. FM and TV Towers at high elevation inland have problems reaching the near shores. AM Towers at high elevation are often inefficient and in soil types which are less conductive.

Note that in the early days of Television, stations fought over Low VHF Channels, which filled those terrain shadows much better. The biggest cities usually had 2, 4, and 5, or 3, 5 or 6. Even Channel 7 and 8 were considered undesirable, and that's why latecomer network ABC usually ended up on Channel 7 in big cities, 8 in nearby larger markets.

There is so much noise on Low VHF now. High VHF is better but is needs more ERP than most have.
