DX report - Saturday, 7/23

The technical side of broadcasting. Think IBOC is a sham? Talk about it here! How about HDTV? Post DX reports here as well.

DX report - Saturday, 7/23

Post by MWmetalhead » Sat Jul 23, 2022 7:30 pm

Nothing too interesting, but figured I would share my observations nonetheless:
- Brighton area: Majic 105.7 from Cleveland was coming in strongly enough to decode RDS (around 9:30 this morning). Also picked up a readable signal from Cleveland's Star 102.1.
- Ionia County: 97.9 WJLB was walking all over semi-local WGRD, which appeared to be broadcasting at reduced power.
- Williamston area: 102.7 WDKL was coming in like a local. Pretty remarkable considering this station, which transmits from the Detroit suburb of Oak Park, has a null in its pattern to the west. Hot 107.5 WGPR from Detroit was also coming in crystal clear at the time.
- Dimondale area (near Lansing) around 3:45p this afternoon: Heard some rather rough sounding hip-hop on 97.1 FM for about 90 seconds fade in & out. Nothing that an Adult CHR would play, so we can rule out Magic 97 from da' U.P. Not sure if this was tropo induced or perhaps e-skip induced. Could've been K97 from Memphis, TN or Hot 97 from New York City.

I got WFMT, 91.3 from Chicago at 00:06 7/23.

Also got WVPE, 88.1 Elkhart, IN in HDRadio at 00:07 7/23

Using a 5 element modified Stellar FM beam and a Sony XDR-F1HD receiver.

There is no station using 91.3 MHz in Chicago. WFMT broadcasts at 98.7 MHz.

Did you mean 91.5 WBEZ?

If you picked up NPR programming at 91.3 MHz, you probably heard WGTE Toledo.

I didn't do a real scan early this morning, but I was able to pick up 106.1 from Mansfield from my home in Toledo. I've been able to pick them up before during tropo sessions. They were playing a rather large library of 80's and 90's songs,

About WDKL, I still see the old WBRB site tower is still there at 14 MIle and Gratiot. Did WDKL abandon that facility ?
I know a lot of stations moved to the new WWJ / now CBS's Ch 62 site behind the O L D WWJ
AM site on 8 mile road. Hard to keep track where everyone is transmitting from :D

Some years ago I was able to hear WMBI in Chicago on 90.1 ! Now too many local (Detroit/Windsor) signals to do any FM DX listening.

I believe they sold the site to American Tower. Last time I passed by, the tower looked bare. I wonder if the environmental issues were ever solved? As I recall, it was a former dump (Pitko Landfill) and benzine was detected on the property. There was a major dust-up between Ragan Henry, and Inner City Broadcasting about that, many years ago.

Their new permanently licensed facility is near the corner of 10 Mile Rd and Greenfield in Oak Park. They broadcast from the same tower used by 93.1. WDRQ and 105.9 WDMK.

What's interesting about that site is 105.9 always had a much stronger signal than 93.1 in Ann Arbor over 20 years ago when I was a student at U-M. It should be the other way around (105.9 has a shallow null to the west). I always wondered if someone accidentally hooked up the transmission lines to the wrong antenna. Back then, 93.1's signal always sounded terrible by where M-14 and I-94 merge, and even in town, it was slightly to considerably weaker than most of the other Southfield / Oak Park FMs when listening indoors.
