The technical side of broadcasting. Think IBOC is a sham? Talk about it here! How about HDTV? Post DX reports here as well.

WUFL QRMing WBZ Oct 14

Post by SolarMax » Thu Oct 14, 2021 11:31 pm

Tuning around AM dial around 1 am Thursday morning (10/14) discovered that WBZ 1030 Boston's usually good signal was being completely swamped by WUFL, which had obviously not signed off past sundown. Not hearing this tonight, so this was either an engineering test, an error, or a violation.

They have two or three FM translators. I think they have a PSA. Over near where Eminem lives, you might hear the oscillator at night. I think someone said they could get 8 watts PSSA with their DA. It's just outside the WBZ 0.5 mV/m 50% skywave contour. Usually, it is willful and repeated violations that trigger enforcement. One of the backup FLR engineers may read this board and recommend corrective action.

Zoom in on this and you'll see that the WUFL TL is a few blocks outside the WBZ 0.5 mV/m 50% skywave contour. Best seen on Open Street Map.

Was there a river flood in progress?
Daytimers are allowed to broadcast at daytime power if an emergency has been declared.

No flood or emergency of any kind in Macomb County.
Even if there was, they were not broadcasting relevant information, just the usual Christian music and Family Life talk.
This seems to have been a single occurrence, hopefully it won't become a habit.

Just for fun I tuned in WBZ on My new Icom 7300 radio, see carrier going up to S9 (50 Microvolts) + 25 dB most of the time and NO HINT of any other signal there.!
I was using a 250 ft Coax fed dipole made for 1.800 MHz I imagine qite a bit of retun loss on 1030 kHz. Quite a bit of modulation showing .
Listened for a while and heard a few periods of fading down to S9 but still heard no other signal there.
I live 28.8 miles due West of the WUFL transmitter site.
