DX-er alert!!! SE Michigan, 6PM on 8-11

The technical side of broadcasting. Think IBOC is a sham? Talk about it here! How about HDTV? Post DX reports here as well.

Picking up Q106 with RDS in Royal Oak and Troy.

Also hearing WJIM-FM, WBCT, WUPS, WVFM, and many others with ease! 97.7 from Midland very audible at the moment.

WWDK is wiping out the Family Life Radio translator at 94.1.

U93 South Bend and WFRN Elkhart were coming in here in Whitmore Lake about half an hour ago. WMUK and WVFM in like locals as well.

Correction - the 97.7 I am hearing is from Sandusky, MI.

WYBR from Big Rapids completely wiping out Windsor's 102.3!

I figured that when I saw the temperature differential at ground level on the weather site I use. It's 10-15 degrees warmer in West Michigan than Southeast Michigan. Unfortunately, I am presently in an area with strong IBOC sidebands. Since WDET got a new transmitter, the IBOC sidebands blast in, covering up CKNX-FM 101.7 and WLEW-FM 102.1, which used to be frequently heard. Then there's all the Windsor Essex new stations and Detroit Area translators on second adjacents. I'm lucky if I can find even a few open channels that you can DX without a good beam antenna with 7-8 dB gain and 20+ dB front to biggest back or side lobe ratio. Even an MR-80 is useless with IBOC sidebands, compared to much cheaper alternatives.

A look at the tropo propagation map shows southern MI, northern OH and IN as a medium-"hot" zone this evening, possibly linked to the storm lines crossing the state. While these observations are based on 144MHz amateur radio reports, the info usually translates well to FM and VHF TV bands

It's been showering on and off here, so I just took one of my Sangean portables out into the carport and did a quick scan of the dial. Nothing really exotic but it's stuff we don't normally get here and it's solid just like local.

91.3 - WQLN Erie PA

103.7 - WRTS Erie PA

104.9 - WRKT Erie PA

91.7 - WUOM Detroit

99.1 - WFMK Lansing

100.3 - WNIC Dearborn

101.1 - WRIF Detroit

I heard 96.7 CHYR ID in Kentwood near the airport and right next to WLAV

Picking up Q106 with RDS four miles due north of the WDMK tower was an amazing catch for me. Loved hearing Avenged Sevenfold and Hellyeah!

107.7 WRKR from Kalamazoo booming into Tawas City right now. A quick browse of the dial suggests a lot of stations from SW Michigan coming in. Not surprising considering the TROPO map right now -

I live north of GR and i got quite a bit of stations from Milwaukee and chicago 50 miles inland that i rarely get such as 102.7 WVAZ

the storm knocked out 90.9 and 91.9

On my way to work this morning, several Chicago stations were in. The most impressive was hearing WSTQ from Streator, IL with local ads only a few miles from WGRD's stick! Also, WHQG tried to lock in HD over WYHA just north of Allegan.

Question, the dark blob over Cleveland/Columbus and "U" - is shown on the map- what does that indicate? Is there a 'legend'?
Also, I see that the map says 20August, today, is that correct?

That is apparently a dynamic image, always auto-updating to the next-day's map.

Source here: https://www.dxinfocentre.com/tropo.html

The "U" stands for "unstable"

Is there a legend anywhere to interpret the meaning of the various colours on the map?
