What's your typical FM Dial?

The technical side of broadcasting. Think IBOC is a sham? Talk about it here! How about HDTV? Post DX reports here as well.

What's your typical FM Dial?

Post by radioandtventhusiast » Fri Jul 03, 2020 6:56 pm

What FM stations do you typically receive on your car or home radio where you live? I saw a now-deleted topic on here from 2010 using the Internet Archive and was curious about how much the dial has changed since then. These are during typical atmospheric conditions.

Here, in south west Ontario, about 100 miles from both Toronto and Detroit, there are a lot of signals on the air but there isn't a lot of variety available. Mostly contemporary garbage or cowboy music. For my presets I have 92.1 CKPC, Jewel FM from Brantford, 93.5 CBC Radio I, 94.9 CHRW University of Western Ontario, 100.5 CBC Music (mostly garage band) 101.3 CKOT Tilsonburg Contemporary Garbage.

I mostly listen on SXM

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it.

I bought a Used F-150 to haul my camper and it had the Satellite radio, whenever they have free listning days , I had to check it out,
I find the audio quality is not even as good as monoural FM. There are a few non stereo High School stations that sound better to me.

Back when I got my first FM tuner, in 1961, I recall there were fewer than 10 signals I could hear on a flat day, from the Detroit area with a twinlead dipole tacket to the ceiling of my room on ground floor here. When there was a tropo opening I could easily hear stations from Ohio and Ontario from well over a hundred miles away , best was Dayton, OH a few times. ( Indoor antenna did not do DX well :D )

I lived in a part of Ontario that, until 1983, had no local FM. I had a Yagi antenna to catch signals from more than a hundred miles away. I was usually able to get something, but never reliably. They would fade out, then I would have to tune around for something else.

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it.

I'm curious if what you were asking was "What are your presets?" and the replies went in a different direction?
Because that's the way I read your query.

In Sarnia there have always been the regulars from Detroit, Windsor, and London. Locally we had the CBC (106.3 first ; now 90.3), 99.9 FM and 107.1 WSAQ from Port Huron for years. There also 95.1 from Chatham which used to be CKSY and with tropo we heard Cleveland, Toledo, Grand Rapids, Lansing and Kitchener, Ontario among other places. Stations like 106.3 CHKS-FM, 96.9 WBTI, and 102.3 WGRT came on in the 1990's.

Despite it's distance Flint, Michigan was always difficult to receive. Even Cars 108 is very weak most of the time.

I'll make my list much like ftballfan's list. Bold stations are the strongest on the dial. Stations which typically come in with RDS are noted as such. IBOC frequencies as well. Stations with more than one station usually heard include both. Those with no dominant station, such as 98.1 where it can be a few options, are just listed as nothing.

The biggest change in the last year has been WIIL. The station used to be in on seek most of the time (the past 20+ years that I can recall), but after they went off the air over the winter, made some repairs, etc., they never returned as a dominant station - just now and then in well :( . Cat Country is more common now.

If you like this list, my 500 Top-of-Hour IDs project can be found here, which has TOH IDs of every station usually heard here in poor or strong conditions.

This list is simply for average conditions.

When I'm not getting a quick NEWS update on WWJ, I listen only to 89X and WRIF 101.1 HD2. Otherwise it's the ipod, Pandora, and Slacker.
