Solar Cycle 25

Post by Turkeytop » Sun May 03, 2020 10:59 pm

According to Arnie Coro at Radio Havana, the sun's magnetic field has reversed, indicating the start of a new solar cycle.

Scientific predictions are that it will be an even weaker cycle than was solar cycle 24.

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it.

I guess I will have to rely on seasonal sporadic E-layer propagation for any 10, 12 and 15 M radio contacts for a long time. :D

Despite my optimistic screen ID, we are still, and will for some time, be in Solar Minimum. There are a few new sunspots bearing Cycle 25 magnetic orientation, but there are still some overlapping Cycle 24 hoidouts. This has been the case for some months. I'd suggest getting info on solar activity from more up-to-date sources like spaceweather.com or Dr. Tamika Skov's Space Weather Woman and many others.

A really interesting phenomenon, how quakes and tsunamis can cause an upward effect on the ionosphere and propagation, described in this article-
Reflected Tsunamis and Space Weather

Six meters is even more fun when it opens up. Should be starting to see the daily openings soon along with AM tropo on 6 and 2m. 12m to me seems like kind of an "orphan" band, often above MUF but like 15m often too low for sporadic E, even during "good" times in the cycles.

When I went from Novice to General, some local friends got me interested in 6M, so I found a heath sixer for 20 bucks and got on AM ! just made some local contacts with a group around Chicago when I moved there for school.
Then I got on SSB / CW and got a few contacts out of the state now and then.
I would often work late and get home to hear all the locals brag about all the places they worked when the band was open that afternoon !! Very frustrating !

I have been trying to complete enough contacts with SKCC club members to get 12 M award, got all the other HF bands in the bag already

I was getting AM stations near the top of the band three hours before Sunset the other Day.

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

One thing every VHF DX enthusiast needs to know:

Sporadic-E skip is, for all practical purposes, unrelated to the 11-year sunspot cycle.

The 1987 Sporadic-E season was one of the best ever- in terms of both quantity and quality. It was during solar minimum.

Since WWV is back on 25 MHz now, it's a good first indicator for looking for openings above 25 MHz. It is now just about impossible in many areas to DX FM BC because of so many new stations, translators, and IBOC sidebands. All the fun that it was in the 1960s and 1970s is nearly gone in many areas. It began with the Docket 80-90 sign ons.

It's kinda fun seeing how many people get all excited at the appearance of a solitary Cycle 25 sunspot, thinking it will light up 6 and 10m, and convinced that the Good Times are again close at hand,

Last year was no slouch either, with the "season" running well into summer, and got my first 6m transatlantic QSO. This past Saturday 5/30 6m was wall to wall signals in the FT8 slice well into the night, even while the WPX CW contest was lighting up the lower HF bands.
