Why several Detroit AMs have reverted to 10 kHz analog bandwidth...

The technical side of broadcasting. Think IBOC is a sham? Talk about it here! How about HDTV? Post DX reports here as well.

Why several Detroit AMs have reverted to 10 kHz analog bandwidth...

I think the whole "let's restrict the crap out of our analog signal's bandwidth and transmit in Hybrid Digital" line of thinking is borne by a notion that most radio listening - especially AM radio listening - is done in the car.

Both 950 and 1270 have turned off their HD exciters. AM 1500 is now transmitting in wide band after multiple years of transmitting in 5 kHz narrow band.

1340's exciter is also off.

910 and 1200 still have their HD exciters turned on, but their analog audio has always sounded pretty good (under current ownership).

My theory? Because virtually NO ONE has an HD capable receiver in the home, broadcasters are realizing HD transmission when so few folks are commuting to work is a WASTE!

Here's the dirty little secret - it was already a waste!!!

Anybody try WCHB (WEXL)1340 and WRDT 560? Never saw the point except that Crawford and their Corporate Engineer Cris Alexander were all in for IBOC. WRDT moves to Radio Plaza at Night and turns if off. But WCHB (WEXL) IBOC only detectably gets out 10 miles or so Days, and maybe 5 miles max most Nights.

1340's IBOC is off right now (and has been for a number of weeks, I believe). However, they are still broadcasting in narrow band in terms of analog audio.

You are generous in giving 1340's IBOC range even 10 miles. I've been within five miles of their site before and have been unable to decode it.

I have a pretty good JVC HD AM/FM receiver on my desk now. Does pretty good reception of HD and subchannels on FM , but the wide band noise coming from the utility cables behind my house and solar charger two houses down, makes in impossible to hear any but the few really strong AM stations in my house.
I heard AM HD pretty well when I had it an a old Ford Escort that I sold , swapped the old, original radio back into the Escort !
When it warms up a bit, I may take the radio and a spare auto bettery back in the woods and really hear the signals.
