VA3 FEZ

The technical side of broadcasting. Think IBOC is a sham? Talk about it here! How about HDTV? Post DX reports here as well.

2M and other VHF FM seems to be the entry level for Amateur radio. with the Many repeaters in operation it takes no more then a hundred bucks for a China made handheld and not much else.
Back in my early days I found it took a skilled builder with good plans to get a rig on the air on VHF ! A few ops with access to retired commercial FM
two way gear still had to modify it down to work on 2 M , and buy Xtals for the frequencies in use locally.
sure has changed :D

$100? Try more like $25-30 USD.

used to be in Ohio you had to ID as: K9DOG mobile 8, or portable 8, or aeronautical 8, etc... when did that stop when you used your call on a repeater outside of your home call territory?

I can't find the specific year, but it has to be at least of couple of decades or more now that ID-ing as /mobile or /portable (with or without district #) was a requirement (just like having to keep a log). Just one's callsign, every ten minutes, is specified, doesn't matter where in the country you are, or where your home callsign is based. There's no prohibition, however, from saying any of that strictly for informational purposes.
And please, without the "KD8---, for I.D." nonsense! :x
The exception is, when operating in a different country, agreements permitting. You do need to use the form "VE4/KD8---" or, "W7/JA2xxx"

I still keep a detailed paper log book, going all the way back to 1961 !
A lot of us CW guys have gone to computer logs to track club awards etc.
I wonder if the Phone ops are the ones who never bother to keep a log ?

I'm only a DX listener and I always keep a log.

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it.

Guys who would buy that will not be able to make a simple GP antenna for it, built in rubber coated whip has it's limitations. that 's why I added some $$$ to buy a external GP antenna.

There are many on-line log systems, I use E-QSL and the QRZ.com log but sporadically, My Paper log here is the one I ALWAYS use for each contact.

Create an account on QRZ.com. If licensed, use callsign as user, if not, make a user name instead. Once verified, when you log in, your call or user name is on the far right, and selections under it will include "My Logbook." The logbook has entry fields for verious QSO data, I don't know how one would use as an SWL log, You might log someone you heard, but they won't see your report unless they're also using QRZ logging
I myself don't use the QRZ,com online log, preferring an on-site logging program, but I do upload selected QSOs to e-QSL and LoTW, as many use those services for awards of various sorts. Logs created on QRZ can be exported as ADIF files, and ADIF files from other logging applications can be imported.

Reasons for keeping an accurate Amateur Radio log;
1. if you get a QSL card you should verify the info; Date/Time/freq/mode/signal report, before returning your card to the sender.
2. If you want to collect various award certificates, you have to submit the required log info to the award managers to qualify.
3. for your own self esteem showing your radio accomplishments.
4. Just because the govt doesn't demand it, you can still do it !
