Scanners

The technical side of broadcasting. Think IBOC is a sham? Talk about it here! How about HDTV? Post DX reports here as well.

The Canadian Forces Snowbirds did a fly over of our city today to honour our health care workers. They flew in from Toronto, did a loop around the city that took them over all of the major hospitals then landed at the airport near our home. I was able to catch a lot of their communications on the scanner.

They were I believe, to communicate with each other. They were using the civil air band to communicate with the airport. On the UHF band there was also a lot of digital noise. Maybe telemetry data from the aircraft, but I don't really know.

So, is the VHF marine band used in shipping?

Yes. You will hear the freighters checking in with "Sarnia Radio"as they pass through as well as coordination with boats like the JW Wescott. Some of the functions moved over to AIS, but there still is audio traffic too.

Last time I was in Hawaii, abvout 20 years ago I asked a day cruise boat capt'n if they uesd the VHF radio often. the answer was; for emergency only to call coast guard. They had a 27 MHz AM radio (CB) they used to talk to the office and other boats.
Last time I was on the FL Keys, Gulf coast, 3 yrs ago< I had my scanner programmed for all the FM marine channels and heard only a few brief calls in a week of listening.

Speaking of Scanners, or WX radios, Anyone else notice the NOAA VHF WX channel has gone down. It's not just my several rcvrs since I still hear the Canada WX broadcast from Sarnia on 162.475/ Just nothing on 162.55 and the few other US WX freqs in range of my antennas.
Any reports ?

Reported last week 6/10 in the Metro Detroit/SE Michigan forum, and via a few news outlets.

Probably one of the first dozen NWR stations in the country, back when it was ESSA, pre-NOAA. Can't believe that they can't have a redundant audio line from the NWS to Southfield?

Turned out to be a failed phone line. Amazing how long it took the telco to find and fix the fault ! !

Too bad that they don't have a radio/RF or Internet backup audio line??

So, today I rode my bike out to the airport to check on the action there. I set up my operation on a low wall just inside the front entrance. There was a lot of activity on various channels. Mostly in aviation lingo that I can't claim to understand.

There was talk with various flight about some bad weather out over Lake Erie between here and Cleveland,

A lot of the calls appeared to be not with planes departing or landing at the airport, but just an exchange of information with flights passing through their air space.

After a while, the security guys seemed to get curious about what I was up to. They kept driving by slowly in their Suburban with the blackened windows. I packed up my stuff and cleared out. I must look like a terrorist.

My son found a freq that seemed to be an air to air intercom for pilots to chat on (probably unofficial) He calls it the pilots' chat line :D 123.45. MHz, nice easy to remember. Check it out if you have not already found it !!!

I have a Radio shack Pro 96 that I bought for $40 at a garage sale. It's digital, but it doesn't get everything. They have new digital radios that do everything other than cell service obviously.
