Heathkit Mohican

Post by Turkeytop » Tue Oct 29, 2019 10:15 pm

Back in the late 60s I wanted this so bad, but couldn't even dream about it. $89 was more than a week's pay for me and I didn't have a nickel to spend on frivolous non-essentials. That would be like $2000 today. Except, if it was $2000 today, I could maybe swing it

I was working at a low wage, non Union job and preparing to get married in just a few months. One of my co-workers working in the same low wage job did get one. I was almost sick with envy.

What we paid for electronics back then was crazy.

Now that we have first rate receivers available at affordable prices, there's nothing left to listen to.

Very cool. I have a Heathkit transitor testor, audio wave generator and ultrasonic remote for one of their color TVs. I used to have a HK oscilloscope somewhere but I think it's long gone now.

I never built a Heathkit. By the time I got to the point in my life where I could afford such things, they were long gone out of business.

I remember getting a Knight Space Spanner for my birthday and putting it together. The first thing I picked up was the finish of the Daytona 500 on AFRTS. It was like '56 or '57, I also miss the days when you could tune in the world.

Remember getting a crystal set for Christmas. My dad helped me assemble it on Christmas night. We lived within sight of the tower of our local AM, but couldn't get it. What I was getting loud and clear was WOWO 1190.

TurkeyTop, I was just like you. I was 13 in 1966 when I got my novice license, and boy did I envy a lot of equipment. And BTW, a few years ago i saw the Mohican at the big Dayton hamfest. $ 200, and it sold. I wanted that radio, but not for $ 200.

Well, I kept my eye on Ebay, one came up, and I got it. At the exact same time, a very good friend of mine found one at another hamfest and bought it for me, without asking, knowing I wanted it. So of course, i paid him for it, and I now own two.

Compared to todays radios, they are very poor in performance. But boy do they look good!

A fifty dollar portable today is probably better than the Mohican. :razz
