Fighting Back To DX The FM BCB In SE Michigan (Or Elsewhere) Again

Here's some home brew antenna designs and software to design high performance FM and TV antennas. From the K6STI site, which has many more designs.

FM BCB 88-108 MHz Designs

Home Depot Yagi-Just designed, to replace all the discontinued High End FM BCB Antennas.

1926 Yagi Uda Design-Would need to be modified for FM BCB 88-108 MHz. Numerous nulls angularly close to the maximum in the typical antenna major lobe arc. These nulls would attenuate Translators, IBOC Sidebands, and New Stations in the same general direction, but not in the same exact direction, which is a much more difficult problem. The first null is about 22 degrees from the maximum azimuth direction.

Small 5 Element FM BCB Yagi.

TV Channel 2-6, 7-13, 14-51+

Will work well with NTSC, ATSC 1.0, and ATSC 3.0.

Small 5 Element TV VHF High 7-13 Yagi, VHF Low 2-6 Dipole, Large 7-13 Yagi, Hoverman

DOS Based Yagi Optimizer Program

These are outside antennas, to be mounted in a clear area 20-30 or more feet above the ground, and unless you have an Armstrong Rotator arrangement, you need a Rotator.

Armstrong Rotators work well, but are inconvenient unless your receiver is outside with your antenna.

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

I'm frustrated that the design of the Hoverman antenna doesn't show any dimensions.

Obviously, it will be a little bit larger.

One antenna I had great DXing with back in the day, was the "S" shaped omni antenna sold by Radio Shaft decades ago. I had one up a tower about 45' and got stations from up to 100 miles away, not to mention sporadic-e and tropo catches. I left mine when I moved from the house back in '92. I wish I would have taken ten minutes to climb up and take it down. I haven't even seen one on eBay since.

While reception would be better for some signals, I think you would be surprised at all the interference you get, Think of WQUS and the WOAP translator, for instance.

FM DXing
I had a 4 element Yagi for FMBC and It did fine up only 30 ft. It got blown down in a storm about ten years ago !
My first DX antenna for FM was a half wave, foldled dipole, I made of TV Twinlead and tacked it to my bedroom celing , when I was a teenager, got many signals from As far south as Dayton, Ohio and even London, Ontario and West to Grand Rapids.. Used a three tube Granco tuner I got new for 20 bucks in 1961.
