Anyone know what type of antennas that those whips sticking out. How did they work, and what was the frequency used.

Boy, I was just a kid when Sputnik was launched, I recall hearing about it and tried to listen for the beacons on my Hallicrafters entry level S38D receiver, think it was 25.005 MHz for the one I could tune to. the other may have been 40.005 mHz, Tha antennas were pretty short for the freq used maybe inductively loaded in the transmitters.
