iHeart podcast mentoring

We’re taking 6 diverse podcasters, giving them free gear, training and $10k to get their show on a network

The NextUp Initiative

So an executive producer at the iHeartPodcast Network, Anna Hossnieh, came up with an initiative to take several underrepresented, diverse creators and give them a chance to learn all about the world of podcasting from the largest global podcasting network.

Anna and her fellow executive producer Joelle Smith put together this program that will mentor 6 people. It's kinda based in LA, NY and Atlanta but anywhere in the US is fine. (If this year works it could be global next year).

Each person will get gear, software, training and a $2k monthly stipend (which you can spend on anything but weed) for 5 months. Speaking of you have to be 18+

At the end each person will have a pitch and at least 3 finished episodes. iHeart will have the right of first refusal for your podcast pitch. If they pass on picking your show, you are free to pitch it somewhere else, or launch it yourself ($10k ain't bad for advertising). But to be honest, with the quality of training and mentoring you’ll get I see no reason why iHeart wouldn’t greenlight your show. From there you could even host more shows or start producing as well.

It’s a serious opportunity to break into the network scene.

However they’ve also brought in people to do classes on how to build out your show independently. That could even turn out to be the better option for you.

I'm not running this initiative but I will be teaching a couple of the sessions. Anna and Joelle have really put together something special. You'll get training from people like Ben Kuebrich who has the top 10 show, algorithm out right now and also worked on the Monster shows (he even pitched DC Sniper), Beth Anne a really, really, really smart EP who is responsible for green lighting new shows, Me (here for the comic relief and editing sessions) and a bunch more really talented hosts and producers (I may have lost the list).

It's a great opportunity if you're looking to get your foot in the door with a network. One of the major benefits of being on a network is the millions of promos they run for your show on other podcasts at launch and elite level cover art done. Not to mention all the advice you could ask for.
