Back in August of 1982 over 40 years ago when I was 17 years old, my late dad & I were going to the Upper Peninsula going to U.S. 2 to M-149 to see Indian Lake & then go to Escanaba which we stayed for the night at a local motel. Then to Munising to see the Pictured Rocks for the first time. Then went to the dirt forest road H-58 which I thought I got lost BUT made it. Also stopped at Grand Marais to get something to eat. My late dad wanted to go to Tahquamenon Falls BUT we did not have anytime because my late dad wanted to get a motel so we then stopped at a downtown Sault Ste. Marie, MI motel & WNEM 5 was on cable!! I went "Holy Toledo" I don't believe it. That was it & we went home the next day.

WNEM and WJRT were apparently on cable in the Sault as early as 1970. I was also interested to see WLUC 6 Marquette listed in newspaper TV listings on both sides of the border then.
Incidentally, before WCML 6 signed on, the only source of "public TV" programming in the Canadian Sault was cable 7, which carried taped OECA (TVO) programs before TVO opened its OTA transmitter in the market. Sault MI apparently had nothing. Even what is now WNMU 13 didn't exist until very late 1972. Did any commercial stations in Northern MI carry Sesame Street or other PBS/NET shows before CMU expanded to Alpena?

Speaking of Tahquamenon, this was Sun Cablevision (later absorbed by TCI-Taft) in Newberry in 1981-82:

2 - CKCY 2 Sault CTV
3 - WJMN 3 Escanaba NBC (switched to ABC the following year)
4 - HBO
5 - CJIC 5 Sault CBC
6 - WLUC 6 Marquette CBS/ABC
7 - WTOM 4 Cheboygan NBC
8 - WGTQ 8 Sault ABC
9 - WKBD 50 Detroit
10 - WWUP 10 Sault CBS
11 - WLUK 11 Green Bay ABC (switched to NBC the following year)
12 - Time & Weather
13 - WNMU 13 Marquette PBS

I remember both, but our family never had the cable tier that carried them. I grew up in suburban Columbus, Ohio, so far out of reach of most/all of the stations in this thread.
I was surprised looking through to see Toledo stations carried on cable so close to Detroit. Monroe County, I understand. Allen Park, etc. really surprises me.

I think I saw that WGTU aired Sesame Street for a couple of years, but WGTU didn't make it to the UP until after WCML came on.

Here's Centel Cable in Traverse City, from December 1988:

3 - WKBD 50 Fox Detroit
4 - WPBN 7 NBC Traverse City
5 - WTBS Atlanta
6 - WCML PBS 6 Alpena/46 Traverse City
7 - CBN Family Channel
8 - WGTU 29 ABC Traverse City
9 - CNN
10 - WWTV 9 CBS Cadillac
11 - ESPN
12 - USA Network
13 - NMC (College/Learning)
14 - WBAY 2 CBS Green Bay / WZZM 13 ABC Grand Rapids
15 - HBO
16 - Disney Channel
17 - Nickelodeon
18 - Cinemax
19 - Weather Channel
20 - MTV
21 - Showtime
22 - WGN Chicago
23 - PASS
24 - C-SPAN
25 - TNN
26 - Lifetime
27 - FNN
29 - A&E
32 - Movie Channel
34 - Discovery Channel
37 - PTL

The Record-Eagle also listed Centel lineups for Bellaire/Central Lake. Crystal Lake, Elk Rapids, Empire, Fife Lake, Kalkaska, Kingsley, Lake City/Manton, Leland, Mancelona, and Suttons Bay, as well as Northern Cable lineups for Charlevoix/Otsego counties and Northport. Looking through the charts, the biggest surprise is that KDVR (Denver's Fox affiliate) was carried in Kingsley and Suttons Bay, on channel 23 in both communities. Neither community got WKBD.

Did WWTV and/or WGTU pre-empt network shows in 1988 (or did WBAY and WZZM air syndicated shows that went uncleared in Traverse City)?

I haven't had a chance to look through the program lineup so I couldn't say. I can say that from the other schedules I've perused from around this time 9 & 10 / 29 & 8 did not seem very pre-empt crazy. Not like, say, WJBK with CBS programming.

And at the western edge of the U.P., in Ironwood:

2 - WLUK 11 ABC Green Bay

5 - WLUC 6 CBS/ABC/NBC Marquette
6 - WDSM 6 NBC/ABC Superior

1980-81
2 - Showtime (according to the Broadcasting Yearbooks, this replaced CKPR on cable 2)

Ch 7 Wausau (now WSAW) was carried in the paper's TV listings but not carried on Ironwood cable.

That's interesting! I could see that though, as "Good Morning America" didn't start until (I think) 1975, and lack of local morning programming (assuming it aired in the morning) would have left open slot for Sesame Street.

Lake Chalevoix Cable TV, Inc (Charlevoix, East Jordan, Boyne City) - Petoskey News Review May 1984

7- WPBN
8- WGTU
9- CBET
10- WWTV
11- USA
12- CNN (NEW)
13- ESPN (NEW)

WJRT and Time/Weather channel were dropped. Cinemax was added in the fall.

GLC-TV, Inc (Petoskey, Harbor Springs) - Petoskey News Review March 1979

6- ETV, Alpena (from the TV schedule, seems to be WCML)

Great Lakes Cable - Petoskey 1970
2- WJRT
3- Time/Weather/Music
4- WTOM
5- WNEM
6- WWUP

WNEM seems to have been carried in Petoskey clear up until at least 1990. Was this because of tropospheric issues that 7&4 had back then?

Sunrise Communications - Onaway (2022)
2- QVC
3- WFQX
4- WTOM
5- CBLT
6- CMT
7- CNN
8- WGTU
9- WCML
10- WWUP
11- CNBC
12- FOX News
13- Weather Channel
14- CNN HLN
15- Bally Sports Detroit Extra
16- blank
17- HBO
18- Cinemax
19- TBS
20- Discovery
21- Nickelodeon
22- WGN
23- Freeform
24- Disney
25- Food Network
26- HGTV
27- ESPN
28- ESPN2
29- Bally Sports Detroit
30- History
31- TNT
32- A&E
33- Lifetime
34- AMC
35- TV Land
36- Paramount
37- USA
38- MTV
39- CMT
40- VH1
41- TBN

I find it interesting that there is still a simple cable lineup, even at a small cable station. The channel 6 "CMT" says "Local Programming" on the schedule, which tells me it is actually a Public Access channel.

From Ocala, Florida, here's the Cox Cable lineup from 1987. All local market (Orlando) unless specified. Present day names and callsigns in brackets.

2 - WESH (NBC)
3 - WCJB 20 Gainesville (ABC; local, as it also serves Ocala)
4 - HBO
5 - WUFT (PBS)
6 - WCPX [WKMG] (CBS)
7 - ESPN
8 - WTBS
9 - WFTV (ABC)
10 - USA
11 - WTOG 44 Tampa (then Fox, now again indy; can be considered a "local" channel, as they had a LPTV repeater on channel 29 in Ocala)
12 - CNN
13 - WOGX 51 (then indy, now Fox)
14 - QVC
17 - A&E
19 - Marion County Schools
21 - Lifetime
23 - CBN [FreeForm]
24 - The Weather Channel
25 - Nickelodeon
26 - Nashville Network
27 - WIYE [WACX] 55 (Christian)
28 - MTV
29 - WTVT 13 Tampa (then CBS, now Fox; I believe prime time CBS programming cleared by WCPX was covered by local access)
31 - VH1
32 - C-SPAN
33 - Discovery Channel
34 - Headline News [HLN]
35 - FNN [CNBC] / BET

Cox did not offer Orlando stations WMFE [WUCF] 24 (PBS) or WOFL 35 (Fox).
