License revocations

Post by ftballfan » Wed Aug 14, 2019 9:46 pm

With the discussion going on over on the Northern Michigan board over some actions that could lead to a license or several licenses getting deleted, I figured it was time to bring up James McCluskey. He had CPs for a few full-power noncommercial FMs (mostly licensed for 1kW or less) and a boat load of translators all around the state. In the late 2000s and early 2010s, he had all of his licenses and CPs cancelled due to lack of candor. For example, he built stations at sites other than their licensed or permitted sites without STAs.

Outside of Michigan, Mike Rice had several licenses cancelled due to lack of candor regarding his criminal history (he was a convicted felon) and Brian Dodge has had several licenses cancelled in New England for hiding under various shell companies to get around the multiple ownership rule.

I'm not sure if all of the McCluskey stations made it to the air. Interesting W209BR 89.7 Columbia Township is not mentioned. If I recall correctly, it was a translator for WAQQ.

WJKQ's transmitter was located in a barn behind an old farmhouse, not quite where it was supposed to be at.

WJCQ, I can't recall if that one made it to the air.

McCluskey had a CP for a 93.3 translator in Manistee that I don't think ever made it on the air. Speaking of 93.3, it can be considered a cursed frequency of sorts as recently there was a full power CP in Onekama that never made it onto the air (and likely never really had plans to as it never was assigned a call sign)

Having helped McKluskey out at WKNX back in the day, he knew one mode and ONLY one mode: fly by the pants. Thankfully, I didn't learn his traits of bad engineering (I was 17 and had way more sense than he did!). I have seen with my own eyes pirate stations who operate far more "legal" than Jim did things. I helped Jim over a period of about 3 years working on WKNX, most of which was trying to bring the pattern back from wherever he had it pointing. I was shocked he actually got Big Rapids on the air. The WJCO fiasco was typical McKluskey. I mean, how could you NOT know 1510 was a daytimer, when all that comes in on that frequency at night is +35 dB of WLAC???

Edit to add: I'm not generally one to diss engineers, but there are morons in all areas of life. Lately, it appears to be an epidemic!

Who's worse, him or Henderson?

Wow... I've never personally dealt with Henderson, but in the realm of radio, I'd say that's a close race!
