I check WWV and CHU on their several frequencies to see how propagation is, simply , by checking signal strength of the stations.
I do the same thing. It's a quick check of how the bands are.

I actualy use WWV to set my clocks and watch now and then, When I plan to do some radio operating I check WWV and CHU on their several frequencies to see how propagation is, simply , by checking signal strength of the stations. I heard the marine WX forecast and storm warnings will be ended.
I was using WWV to set my clocks, however, even though I have better SW BC portable RCVRs, the signal is almost always worse than I can ever remember, and doesn't show any signs of recovering. It's not even noise, its low signal return on ANY frequency. Used to be, Could get WWV (and CHU) on two frequencies using the portables. Now, I have trouble just getting one. The last time I checked for CHU, it was absent on 3330, 7850, and 14670. Also CFRB 6070 has been absent.

AM BCB has been better, especially during CH, which is fun from the very strong Day facilities which show up alone on a frequency, sometimes near Solar Noon (~ LT-0.5 hours EST, LT-1.5 hours EDT) How is 160 meters?

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

Well, I have noticed the same about the lower HF bands lately, WWV and CHU are far weaker than I remember them. I have not heard much on 160 at all. Granted, I don't have the antennas I did years ago, and EMI is a big issue in my house. I'm going outside to throw a longwire up today...

Many days, you have the pilot frequencies of the expanded band AM BC much of the day, and particularly during CH.

Sometimes, they may be weak but identifiable with a long wire. If the X Band is up, 160 meters is likely to be more so. Many days, the first stations I hear are the 1610, 1650, and 1690 Toronto. Also 1680 Ada and 1660 Kalamazoo. Also 1690 Berwyn, 1620 South Bend, 1640 Sussex, and 1630 Des Moines. Whether you hear 1580 Morningside or 1580 Oshawa indicates what direction you are likely to log.
