Re: Scanners

Last time I was in Hawaii, abvout 20 years ago I asked a day cruise boat capt'n if they uesd the VHF radio often. the answer was; for emergency only to call coast guard. They had a 27 MHz AM radio (CB) they used to talk to the office and other boats. Last time I was on the FL Keys, Gulf coast, 3 yrs...

Re: Spring/Summer 2020 Tropos

There was a fire across the street from the Historic Studios of WGMZ, circa 1963, shared with co owned WAMM, at 740 S. Saginaw St., and originally the WTAC Big 600 Studios. The building across the street was in danger of collapsing, and WGMZ went off the air. WFBE offered to let them use their stud...

Re: Spring/Summer 2020 Tropos

I got my first FM radio in 1961, was a three tube Granco tuner that i listened to with a pair of Brush xtal earphones i salvaged fromm the school language lab trash can, and repaired. Then there were about a half dozen Detroit statons and WUOM in AA. Lots of vacant space across the dial for DX to c...

Re: Spring/Summer 2020 Tropos

Some nice catches from AA area.
I have kind of given up on FM since there are so many repeaters of full power local stations and Smile FM and othr low power outlets clogging every channel in the Detroit Metro !

Re: VA3 FEZ

Reasons for keeping an accurate Amateur Radio log; 1. if you get a QSL card you should verify the info; Date/Time/freq/mode/signal report, before returning your card to the sender. 2. If you want to collect various award certificates, you have to submit the required log info to the award managers to...

Re: VA3 FEZ

There are many on-line log systems, I use E-QSL and the QRZ.com log but sporadically, My Paper log here is the one I ALWAYS use for each contact.

$100? Try more like $25-30 USD.
Guys who would buy that will not be able to make a simple GP antenna for it, built in rubber coated whip has it's limitations. that 's why I added some $$$ to buy a external GP antenna.

Re: VA3 FEZ

I still keep a detailed paper log book, going all the way back to 1961 !
A lot of us CW guys have gone to computer logs to track club awards etc.
I wonder if the Phone ops are the ones who never bother to keep a log ?

Kinda like my GE Superradio with the high sensitivity of the Narrow Band selection and the Hi Fi sound of the Wide Band selection.

Re: New GM Radio

Good news/Bad news I usually update my vehicle every ten years but I am already 4 years late and the doggon Focus starts up evry time I turn the key (I guesss you don'teven do that on newer cars). The old short trip car only has AM/FM receptions (at least the FM can decode stereo) with no dashboard...

Re: I Never Saw A Tuning Indicator I Didn't Like

The "magic Eye" was a real eye catcher , an analog meter is even better and best is my own ear to get a signal tuned in on CW orSSB on the HF SW bands.
