Re: Switching to/from another station's signal for network s

But the most notable case, though, occurred with WNYP (now WNYB) channel 26 in Buffalo. When that station first signed on in 1966 (owned by the late Bud Paxson of HSN and Ion fame), it affiliated with, of all networks, the Canadian CTV network. They couldn't afford a direct feed, so the signal of C...

Re: WTOL NFL game choices

I am picking my brain from long ago but, if I remember correctly it has to do with the old 60 mile blackout rule. When the Lions played at Briggs Stadium WTOL could not broadcast the Lions because they were within the 60 mile radius. That meant the WJIM was the nearest station that could carry them...

Re: WTOL NFL game choices

(Disclaimer: I have no dog in this fight, I'm a Packers fan. Although Steelers fans annoy the hell out of me) Last week, the Browns and Lions played separate games that both aired on CBS at 1:00. Although the Browns are having one of the worst seasons in NFL history and the Lions are driving for th...

Re: Network programming preemptions by individual stations

The Movie is close to ten years old so some if it might be dated by now. I meant this... http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/subcultures/shipping WSPD-TV (precursor of WTVG) did not air the original SNL's from 75-79; a 'summary show' was the first time it was broadcast in Toledo. Had to rely on the rare ...

I'm already getting "shipped" confused with whatever new meme/slang is out there these days.

Re: Detroit/Toledo Big Three schedule for 12/10/1980

In that particular case, broadcasters couldn't own more than one TV station in the same city, or within a certain distance of an adjacent city. Such an example is WJBK Detroit and WTVG Toledo, which were both owned by Storer Broadcasting before restrictions on adjacent markets were established. Whe...

Re: Detroit/Toledo Big Three schedule for 12/10/1980

There would be a long list of buyers for a network like NBC in 1980, who could have got it for a discount from RCA because of its lagging primetime. Potential buyers then could have included movie studios like Paramount (Gulf+Western), Universal (MCA) or Fox, conglomerates like GE, AT&T or ITT or a...

Re: Detroit/Toledo Big Three schedule for 12/10/1980

WDHO Channel 24 (ABC) 7:30: The Benny Hill Show (WDHO) I've never heard of Benny Hill being aired during a daytime slot, (to many women losing their clothes.) In the Tampa Bay area around this time, WTVT showed Benny Hill Saturday nights at 7:30PM, right after Dance Fever and before CBS's Saturday ...

I do too (though I think WUPW 36 would also air it after they signed on in '85). Nice to think another station in town took a gamble on that

Re: Network programming preemptions by individual stations

...I heard over on another forum that last year the CBS and NBC affiliates in Peoria, Illinois preempted much network programs with infomercials. In fact, NBC Nightly News was preempted by a Humana infomercial and even CBS News' coverage of Pope Francis' US visit was preempted by infomercials befor...

Re: Network programming preemptions by individual stations

In 1983, WTVT in Tampa, then with CBS, pre-empted a new Peanuts special, "Is This Goodbye, Charlie Brown?" -- with a Three's Company rerun... Now I wonder what kind of backlash could they have gotten from the veteran community had they done that to "What Have We Learned, Charlie Brown?" ...which, l...

Re: Network programming preemptions by individual stations

Well, I hope WTOL didn't preempt any of the Peanuts specials for some talk thingamajig at all during the years CBS aired those specials. If so, then I'm sure hundreds would've be royally mad... They probably did it once or twice and assume people would tune to WJBK instead, I don't recall which spe...

Re: Network programming preemptions by individual stations

Thinking of what I said earlier of those of us down here either not knowing or caring, I'm sure there was one or two of us who bothered writing to our local stations about this very matter, and either not being answered or giving some surgar-coated response asspat letter to explain why they decided...

Re: Network programming preemptions by individual stations

WDIV is preempting Hollywood Game night tomorrow for a special on Flint, (not the biggest loss in the world.) It will still air in the Detroit market on WADL. Lucky guys in Detroit I guess. Thinking of what I said earlier of those of us down here either not knowing or caring, I'm sure there was one...

In the early 90's WDIV didn't show the few months of The Soap Santa Barbara. Old 62 aired it until it ended in January of 1993.
Too bad Toledo doesn't have that luxury.
