Re: Jessica Starr RIP

The cornea is full of pain receptors, and this new procedure goes much deeper into the cornea than regular LASIK. There may be a genetic or individual variability in the distribution of these nerve endings, explaining why some people are having severe problems and others not so severe. This comment ...

Re: CKLW’s Influences On Toledo and Cleveland Ratings

First of all, Leonard Kahn literally invented AM Stereo, unless you count using two stations to produce Stereo. But Leonard should have had better promotion and legal representation. His views on AM Stereo were hyperbolic. Other systems were not horrible. And the R-L subcarrier HAD to phase modulate...

Re: Country 600 North Bay

When the WTVN CP expired as I recall, the new Class B Application was filed the next day. There was no time for CKAT to change it's pattern. I'd have to look at CDBS to verify the timeline. For sure, CKAT is not operating normally, as it comes in strong all the time now at Night. WMT has had problem...

Re: CKLW’s Influences On Toledo and Cleveland Ratings

Realize that CKLW was and is only the equivalent of 5 kW nondirectional to many parts of Detroit Metro to the NW during the Day, and even more at Night. The IDF toward Toledo Days exceeds WJR's inverse field. Parts of Detroit Metro, particularly at Night further away to the NW, were less than Toledo...

Re: CKLW’s Influences On Toledo and Cleveland Ratings

As I recall, way back when, in '67, CKLW would give the temperature in Toledo in the Daytime and the temperature in Cleveland at Night. If you look at Regional Hits on ARSA Surveys, you'll see that CKLW had a profound effect on Playlists in Cleveland. Also, Windsor, CT and New Haven, CT from the Eas...

Re: CKLW’s Influences On Toledo and Cleveland Ratings

I've heard/read more than once that CKLW did reach #1 rank in Cleveland in some form in the 1960s. I do remember hearing commercials for department stores in Cleveland (and Erie, PA!) back in the day. Not sure how well they did in Toledo. They were certainly strong enough there during the day, but ...

Re: CJBK and CKSL London, Ontario

I think it must have been 1250, but I heard 16 towers. The dozen plus sounds like a Day and Night array with one tower in common.

Re: CJBK and CKSL London, Ontario

CHLO and CHFI/CFTR both operated on 680 for a while, with 1000 watts Day. CHFI was 10000 watts Night. In order to upgrade to 50 kW, the owners paid the owners of CHLO to move to 1570. In between the move and the upgrade to 50 kW, I could easily tune WDBC 680 Escanaba in the Daytime by nulling out CH...

Re: CJBK and CKSL London, Ontario

I listened to CHLO 680 before they moved, which could be heard far and wide Days, and then 1570, which could be heard all over at Night until they let 1570s in the US go on at Night.

I rarely heard CJBK/CJOE and CKSL because of their DA patterns.

Re: Bob Seger, Terry Knight, ? & Mysterians, Tidal Waves, Unrelated Segments, etc.

Kev, do you know where to find Mark Karpinski? He came in quite a few years ago and talked with us, but now I don't know where to find him. I'm interested if he has any more surveys from the era from outstate MI. The CKLW and WKNR charts are pretty much complete on ARSA and ct30. Here's the #1 Chart...

Re: Real Time DX Log

It was on a GE SuperRadio II Barefoot. Every day, about 4:00 PM or so, I start at the upper limit of the unmodified radio. The first one I have encountered the last few days is WSJP 1640 in Sussex, WI. I look for clear signals when I go by. When I find a format, I look through a list by format. If I...
