Re: Why did some TV stations move from VHF to UHF in the DTV transition?

A couple of other factors. VHF ERPs allowed are too low due to flaws in the modeling and testing. Most antenna elements used are too short for efficiently receiving VHF 7-13, and way to short for efficiently receiving VHF 2-6. UHF cannot possibly bend over hills and the earth's curvature, which effe...

Re: Legendary FM Rock Stations

Thanks for your input, Beer Man. I don't think its just parents and management who felt like this, but responsible adults and mature older children in general. Many of these DJs were out of there when they said the seven words or played tracks like Country Joe and the Fish or the MC5 that had those ...

Re: Mini DXpedition 2016

AM BC Critical Hours has been hot the last week or so. Logged a few new ones and some I haven't heard in many years, like WBAL 1090 Baltimore.

Heard what I think was WBTM 1330 Danville, VA about 4:30 PM today. Classic Hits or Oldies. 5000 watts non-DA-D.

Re: AM Band Scan.

Thanks for the analysis, Rich.

The only way that I can see that this could be is if both WJR was operating on Auxiliary facilities and WFDF was on its 10 kW backup transmitter. Maybe on early Monday morning, but still unlikely.

Re: Legendary FM Rock Stations

The reason the stations began "experimenting" with new formats is because the FCC came up with the rules limiting AM-FM simulcasts. There were exceptions, like Daytimers and COLs under 100000 population. Frankly, the programming on FM wasn't that compelling the first few years and most people contin...

Re: AMP 98.7 flipping!

WOMC will not go 100% Christmas this year. Doesn't want to fragment ratings with WNIC. Doing too well at #1 or #2. WWJ AM and WWJ FM would be #1, though I don't know how much advertising revenue it could get with the simulcast. How is WBBM doing revenue wise?

Re: Metro Detroit CB

The last time I tried, I only heard skip from stations using linears and reverb. If the propagation was line of sight, I heard very little. Between cell phones and internet becoming universal, the reasons for widespread use have disappeared. I wonder how much time and money the FCC spends on CB enfo...

Re: Rimshots

The interference between WHNN and WDVD and between WDRQ and WKQZ is between coowned stations. I realize that they think the larger market is more important and needs the subchannels to get around other rules like feeding translators. But really the IBOC interference models were based on fully spaced...

Re: AM Band Scan.

The Tecsuns with the digital signal strength meter from 0-99 dB scale seem to be accurate with appropriate fudge factors. I did a bandscan in a place where I had checked previously with a real FI meter. I told the CE of one station that the signal seemed to be inconsistent with FI readings done prev...

Re: California Radio WJR FM 96.3

I remember they had jingles for WJR-FM, not really fancy but well sung. I think it went on into 1972, as I remember listening to it in Harrisville in 1972 in the good old days of FM DXing. It faded in and out but was usually there on my Sony AM-FM Cassette unit, just using the telescoping whip anten...
