Re: AM reception question

I had a similar thing happen in a house that was just six years old. I was using the TV twin lead twisted together as a short vertical, and fed into a one transistor preamp inductively coupled to a Panasonic portable. When you turned the light on, the preamp began to oscillate from the increased cou...

Re: AM reception question

I have had similar things happen to me, like when trying to null out a signal, then somebody flips on a light switch, and it's no longer nulled. My theory is that the electrical noisemaker is like a carrier current station, and the wires in the house act like an antenna. When you flip on the light s...

Non Metallic Antenna Mounting Pipes

I'm thinking of mounting a short light vertically polarized antenna on a PVC mast on a PVC vent pipe, to avoid reflections affecting the pattern and/or null depth.

PVC is a little flimsy if you get past a few feet. Anybody ever try reinforcing PVC pipe with a wood dowel?

Re: WCXI problems

I was just looking at the Proofs of Performance done on the Daytime WDEO 990 DA near Clark Rd., North of Ypsilanti. Several Radials were included in the WMVP 1000 Application when they went to a new DA system. This was done to show that the first adjacent signals didn't have prohibited overlap. The ...

Re: Truly Underrated Songs By Brian Hyland, Gary Lewis, With Leon Russell On Bells And Keyboards

One thing I've noticed, is there are usually one or more presently famous, or became famous later, people behind many obscure or forgotten songs. With "The Joker Went Wild", you have Songwriter Bobby Russell and Arranger and Backing Tracks by Leon Russell.

Re: WXLA 1170

It seems that I had a 1170 WDTB Coverage Map, though I don't remember how I got it. As I recall, the nulls were pointed in the general direction WWVA and WFEN. It was two towers in a different orientation. I think they moved one tower.

Re: WCXI problems

When basically all Class IVs went from 250 to 1000 watts Night, the Nighttime Interference Free distance remained the same. The NIF Contour and the Interference both doubled. With twice the field strength, it had a better signal to electrical noise ratio. Many Class IVs had very good signals for 3-8...

Re: Under Construction-100 Oldest Radio Stations In The US

WFDF was previously experimentally licensed to Frank Fallain as 8ZH, before WEAA. I read recently that KDKA was licensed experimentally as 8ZZ before the commercial license was issued. So maybe it's a different variety of apple, if not an orange. All I'm saying is we have to be consistent.

Re: WXLA 1170

It was originally WDTB 1170, and was 1 kW DA-D. The DA pattern was a different orientation as I recall, from what it was when it moved to 1180. Between 1981 and the late 1990s, the information is sketchy on various websites, including the FCC website. http://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/prod/cdbs/forms...

Re: WXLA 1170

Although it has allowed both WCXI and WXLA to upgrade with less restrictions, I think it may have had more to do with the ground wave and Critical Hours restrictions to WWVA 1170 vs. WHAM 1180. Class Is/As are protected to the 0.1 mV/m ground wave contour. The path to the WWVA 0.1 mV/m ground wave c...

Re: 1680 WPRR AM

I can confirm hearing on skywave over 100 miles away, an Urban Adult Contemporary like format on 1680, which faded in and out with the station on 1680 near Philadelphia playing music in Spanish. That station IDed but it faded until they said Philadelphia as part of the New Jersey COL ID. It is WTTM....

Re: WCXI 1160 Republican Talk Radio

I think they could modify it to be, say 20 kW, and measure the conductivities toward WYLL, and let the nulls out to the West. It would serve Fenton and Livingston County and surrounding areas much better. Some idea of the real WDEO Proof of Performance conductivities can be found on the WMVP applica...

Re: WCXI problems

Why? Some is young radio people who long ago gave up on AM. Some of it is not being motivated to make it work in some markets. Some is the real decline of radio vs. other forms of delivery. Some is neglect. Some of it is engineers and owners not listening to find out if they are on or off the air. ...
