Re: Anchors sellling instead of reporting

Nothing new here. The 7&4/29&8 newscasts have a long history of devoting lengthy news segments to the opening and expansion of businesses in the TC area, especially banks and brokerage houses. 9&10 also does frequent and lengthy remotes featuring local businesses during the Michigan This Morning sho...

Re: 7&4 in 1980

Note that WPBN was probably still getting its NBC feed off-air from WOTV (now WOOD) and WNEM at the time. Still, it's incredible that they lose sync switching between the network pickup and local insertion. That should have been engineered out of their chain by early 1954. WPBN took off air pickups...

Re: 7&4 in 1980

Wow, great find! That "graphics package" looks like the same RHL character generator that we suffered with at CJIC/CKCY/CHBX-TV. What a pain in the arse... Re: TV RF Channel Changes

Thanks for sharing that, ftballfan. Seems odd to me that WOOD-TV would've been omitted from the 1954 listings. Surely those who were well-off enough to invest in the expensive early TVs and deep-fringe antenna systems required back then would've been trying to catch a signal from WLAV-TV/WOOD-TV. Al...

Re: TV RF Channel Changes

The Milwaukee stations are rarely a nuisance in the GR and Kzoo areas. One has to be far away from the city or within, say, 10 miles of the lake shore for that to be a major issue. A lot of people remember wwtv back when ch 13, Cadillac as the first tv signal they could get in Traverse City. But if...

Re: TV Guide

While residing in the UP, we always found the Sunday Free Press TV Book the most useful. TV Guide did not list CICO or CKCY/CHBX. Sometime after CKCY launched, they stopped listing CJIC. The Detroit News book did not list WJMN, CKCY/CHBX, or CJIC. One of our local drugstores gave out a free TV listi...

Re: Beer Snobs

If you're outta Bud, tough Schlitz! And if you drink a case of Blatz, you'll get a case of the Schlitz. The first beer I ever tasted was a PBR. It was delightful then and still is today. These things go in cycles. I would not wager against a regular ol' mass-market brewski becoming fashionable again.

Holy wah, that's a lot of dough for the stations involved.

Re: 99.3 WQAN Signal Strength

Monitoring from Manistee today: Dead air on 99.3; 92.3 came in strong with sports-talk and 101.9 had a listenable signal.

Re: WBKB Footage Unearthed... At Last!

Here's a message I received awhile ago about some WBKB history: WBKB's is a really a great story - four guys who worked together at American Forces TV Network Germany Ramstein in the late 60's and early 70's stayed in touch after we seperated -as civilians - it was a dream of ours to build a TV sta...

Re: WBKB Footage Unearthed... At Last!

I never could pick up WBKB when I was a kid. Growing up on the southeast side of Cheboygan (I was only two miles from the WTOM tower) I had hoped I would pick up WBKB on quiet, clear sky nights. Unfortunately that never happened. Very occasionally, I could pick up WBKB at the Radar Base near Sault ...

Re: Daylight Savings Time, Keep it or get rid of it...

DST all year seems like a good plan good to me. As long as the U.P. is returned to the Central Time Zone. My hometown is near Escanaba: In 1971, under year-round CST, high noon was 11:58 CST. In 1972, when DST was mandated statewide, high noon was 12:58 CDT. That still sorta made sense, since Wisco...

Re: Daylight Savings Time, Keep it or get rid of it...

Around Escanaba, when DST kicks in, high noon can occur as late as 1:58 PM. That's stupid. Put the whole Upper Peninsula back on Central Time, as it used to be. WLUC-TV6 in Marquette never tape-delayed programming back when Michigan wasn't on DST. When it came to TV listings, we all understood that ...

Re: Panhandling

I don't give money to anyone I don't know. Not somebody panhandling, not the Salvation Army, not the Girl Scouts, not Hurricane relief, none of that stuff. I know enough people personally that need money. Soup kitchens I work at, the church I attend. Someone I know that needs a few pennies. Having ...

Re: Fall 18 Nielsens

The best thing for 101.9, IMHO, would be for IPR to buy it and move IPR News to 101.9, spinning off 91.5 to a religious broadcaster (i.e. The Promise FM, which just bought 100.9 East Jordan from IPR) Y'know, that's really not a bad idea at all. With 101.9 now putting a listenable signal into the Ma...
