Could they be trying to take away listeners from 98.7 as well? 98.7 has played some similar bands heard on 106.7 now.

They have likely done this in many markets. KZOK in Seattle added an HD2 for TikTok radio as well.

Agreed.
If you go on archive.org and look at the Detroit ratings back in 2011-2014, when the Tigers were a winning team, 97.1 was pulling in killer numbers every month, especially during and near the postseason.
