Re: "Crusted Everywhere!"

Strange that there are no problems with the D cells usually, just the AA and AAA. I have a Sony Battery that came with a 4.5 V 3 C Cell Sony Radio our family won as a Company Safety Prize circa 1968. The other two leaked and were discarded, but the third had no leakage after DECADES.

Re: WCAR, Dark ?

I recall another station with a major fire, Many decades ago, was WHRV, later WAAM in Ann Arbor! I talked at length with Doug Boynton once about this. They ran at 250 watts nondirectional for a couple of years as I recall. After that, they moved to the Merritt Rd. and Platt Rd. site next to US 23. ...

Re: Now IHM Wants To Own ALL The AM Stations!

If you read the manual, you will find that many radios have the option of tuning down to 76 MHz by a special setting. IBOC would likely be possible, don't know about digital only. Personally, I don't think digital is worth the problems it results in with interference sources to and from the signal.

Versatile C. Crane FM Very Low Power Transmitter

Anyone have any experience with this particular device? I've always been very disappointed with the range of such devices. This one has the advantage of using "in between" frequencies to help with interference. It also has a simple monitor to avoid overmodulation. With Tom Kneitel One Transistor tra...

Re: WKAR-AM Translator

WKAR 870 is far enough outside the WWL 0.5 mV/m 50% skywave contour to have enough power on a PSSA or Class B to serve the immediate campus area and the surrounding area of East Lansing. Looking at the satellite photos of the TL, it looks like you could fit a relatively low power PSSA with a DA on t...

Re: WWCK AM 1570 off the air?

They were back on stronger and louder than I can ever remember a couple weeks ago. The Tune In option is working. Playing "Beat It" by MJ. Now "Philadelphia Freedom" by EJ. Good news. I remember the old "water cooled" transmitter 1570 used many years ago. I was beginning to think I would have to lo...

Re: WKAR-AM Translator

If these interference complaints and having to move all over the dial don't convince people that translators are not the answer, I don't know what will. They need a few MHz, preferably in the 76-88 MHz region used for FM radio in other countries. Many radios can already receive this band in a setup ...

I do not allow direct upload of image files to my domain, except for user profile avatars. However, you can use the ["img"] [/"img"] tags (remove the quotes) to imbed image files from a third party site. There should be no size limit restriction since this domain is not hosting the image. I'll have...

Re: Real Oldies / WGVU is going away in January

Peter C rarely mentioned Muskegon. Frazier had already sold KBZ by the time I worked for the company. Wikipedia says Reams owned WKBZ from 1968 to 1986. So the APP was submitted and dismissed under their watch. They also applied for 5 kW back in the 1940s and 1950s. There is so much crossed off on ...

Re: Real Oldies / WGVU is going away in January

I suspect that there may be a sweet spot of conductivity near Holland, around the water areas East of Lake Michigan. But quite small. It would be really interesting to look at the whole WOOD 20 kW Proofs of Performance, which were required then, and generally go out 20 miles. Copying services in DC ...

Re: Real Oldies / WGVU is going away in January

I copied a little image showing the three AM towers that were once in that area and still are except WMAX...WGVU from the USGS Topographical Map. I would like to resize and post it for reference. What is the biggest image file that can be pasted in from the map?

Re: Real Oldies / WGVU is going away in January

Thanks for the info. The reason I asked is because I was wondering if that would give the 1480 / Kentwood allocation a little more freedom with regard to signal propagation to the south. Seems to me a diplexing at the WOOD 1300 site may be feasible. Probably won't ever happen, though. The big boys ...

Re: Real Oldies / WGVU is going away in January

Out of curiosity, has the allotment for the old AM 1470 (the former WQSN / WQLR) in Kalamazoo been deleted? WKPR moved to 1440 and is now 4000 watts nondirectional. 1470 was replaced by 1660 in the expanded band . 1420 and 1470 are now precluded locally by WKPR on 1440. WFNT 1470, WIBV (WBKV) 1470,...

Re: Real Oldies / WGVU is going away in January

I just recalled that WKBZ 850 once applied for 10 kW Daytime. CDBS shows it happening around 1981-1982. I think that it was owned by Reams Broadcasting. Pete Cavanaugh sadly has died, so he cant be asked. Colonel Flagg might have some recollections about this. It was returned because of overlap, cir...
