Re: I disagree with our weather forecasters on TV
Here's this afternoon's discussion from NWS Grand Rapids: UPDATE... Issued at 1225 PM EDT Wed Jul 28 2021 Latest 12Z guidance is continuing the farther north trend of the most severe convection later tonight, even hinting at the possibility of a derecho impacting much or parts of wrn Lwr MI. Since t...

Re: I disagree with our weather forecasters on TV
TL;DR: SPC has included Metro Detroit and most of SE MI in the Slight Risk and shifted the Moderate Risk a bit farther north as well. I agree with these adjustments. I think convective initiation will begin in the vicinity of the MN/WI border near Eau Claire and north of Wasau, quickly becoming sup...

Re: I disagree with our weather forecasters on TV
There's some severe weather popping up around La Crosse, WI right now. These can often leave a wake of subsidence and cloud debris that could limit the intensity of the storms tomorrow. I think it's kind of hard to make that case with the strength of the jet stream aloft. The fresh rainfall could ju...

Re: I disagree with our weather forecasters on TV
Wow. I'm looking at the 00Z Upper Air soundings and this jet stream is just absolutely wicked for this time of year. It's even somewhat respectable for a springtime setup, especially at 500 mb (70 knots in Manitoba). There's also a 100-110kt jet streak at 250 mb extending from British Columbia into ...

Re: I disagree with our weather forecasters on TV
Good job by DTX for focusing on the Thumb today and the SPC for maintaining the marginal risk! Regarding tomorrow, I will add that H*** caveats must be attached to models (especially CAMs) in these summer patterns. They don't resolve mesoscale features that are critical for convective initiation wel...

Re: Economic choices
It is worth noting that current estimates I've read of severe COVID infections resulting in hospitalizations are comprised of about 90% unvaccinated and 10% vaccinated. That seems to suggest that the vaccines are indeed quite effective and reduce your chances of a severe infection by about an order ...

Re: I disagree with our weather forecasters on TV
Keep an eye out on the Thumb and mid-Michigan today for isolate strong to severe storms this evening. There's another weak 500 mb shortwave moving in across Lake Michigan. There's also a bit of a temperature boundary set up from what's left of storms that formed in the northern plains yesterday acro...

Re: Unlock Michigan's next target: 1978 health law
I'm conflicted. I am overall uncomfortable with having the balance of power being so heavily tilted in favor of the executive branch. However, in true emergencies, I do believe that there needs to be a framework for swift ad hoc actions to account for acute problems that are difficult to anticipate....

Good to know. Yeah, Panera is just okay food-wise... especially downtown.

Re: What is the purpose of local radio anymore?
Hell, most of the time, if a station goes off the air, nobody knows about it for an hour! Everything in the studios for Dave and Chuck went down the other day and they just talked to keep it on the air. THAT is what local radio is supposed to do. When the computer crashes, you can hear the audience...

Re: What is the purpose of local radio anymore?
Traditional Radio is now no longer needed. With most people, the smartphone has become "the new radio" most everyone I know doesn't even own a radio except in their vehicles. If you purchase a radio today off the retail shelf it's totally garbage from China and doesn't barely pick up any reception....

Re: Economic choices
I've been down that area quite a bit, but actually have never gone inside Brueggers. Panera is much better known to the large non-Michigan populous, there's much more seating and set up nicely for workspaces, and seems much more inviting overall. I agree with the overall dynamics of your post (re: r...

What is the purpose of local radio anymore?
Back in the day when radio was less automated, you'd usually hear somebody in the studio providing weather updates as conditions warranted. This area has been slammed with unusually extreme storms (although tornadoes and wind damage are certainly a "normal" part of Michigan summers). Battery/car rad...
