Re: WWJ signal problems? (+ WJR audio distortion)

Along Lake Shore Drive in Chicago, buildings that are approximately 1/4 wavelength at 780-790 block WBBM 780 to the West in certain areas, and enhance WSGW 790 to the East. On my first exposure to an FIM-21, Dave Gale at WTRX 1330 measured several signals for me, as he was afraid I might drop it. Mo...

Re: WWJ signal problems? (+ WJR audio distortion)

Some old and new contours for stations which changed facilities which reach Tawas City. Old vs. new WWJ service area application was too old to be in the FCC online records. https://licensing.fcc.gov/cdbs/CDBS_Attachment/getattachment.jsp?appn=100706334&qnum=5120©num=1&exhcnum=1 https://licensin...

Re: WWJ signal problems? (+ WJR audio distortion)

Thanks for posting that bandscan again, bmw.

That zip code centroid or post office must be within 1/2 mile from the WIOS towers to be that strong. Almost within the blanketing contour (1 V/m).

Re: WWJ signal problems? (+ WJR audio distortion)

Except for the Canadian stations that moved to FM or another frequency, and stations that moved or otherwise upgraded, these are the same signals you always heard in Harrisville. The surprising one was WJBK/WDEE/WLQV 1500. I remember some people on the beach had that weird shaped radio that came in ...

Re: WWJ signal problems? (+ WJR audio distortion)

Daytime skywave this time of year may be another factor. I've noticed that it rarely affects stations below 900. And WFDF seems to be on their 10 kW back up transmitter a lot. They should have built a building that would have space to hold an old 50 kW transmitter. The old building in Burton had a l...

Re: WWJ signal problems? (+ WJR audio distortion)

Thanks Rich. The inverse field at that elevation angle for WJR is considerably reduced at that distance. The WWJ array has a broadside East West arrangement, which causes the field to decrease less with elevation angle compared to the 195 degree WJR radiator, or a classic three or four tower in line...

Re: WWJ signal problems? (+ WJR audio distortion)

I noticed a lot of fading tonight in Macomb County around Sunset. bmw, when you say the signal is good, is this up near Tawas City, and Day or Night or both? Actually, as you probably know, WWJ and other 50 kW stations from the Detroit Area are among the strongest ground waves and skywaves in that a...

I realize that 3 letter callsigns aren't as important as they used to be, but why don't they go back to KSO. KSO, Des Moines' Sports Outlet.

Re: Beautiful Music Stations in Detroit

Former WGMZ Beautiful Music station (107.9 FM) switches to "CARS 108" WCRZ in Flint, MI back on June 15, 1984. Here is what happened (audio only): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEm-xKZze8k Great find, Matt! I never heard audio of that flip before. As I recall they tried to revive the WGMZ identit...

Re: Passive Repeaters On Hilltops

The Antennacraft/Archer FM-6 and FM-10 use a 3 element driven Log Periodic design in conjunction with Yagi type directors and reflectors. Note that the FM-6 discussion has a modification which considerably improves performance. http://ham-radio.com/k6sti/fm6.htm http://ham-radio.com/k6sti/fm10.htm T...

Re: Most FM Class Changes For A Single Facility

Because FAA regulations don't allow towers close to 1500+ feet tall anywhere near here, no really high buildings in Zone II around here, and there are no really high mountains to build up HAAT (though a few are above 1500 feet, like WWTV, but the tower rent for an FM probably wouldn't be feasible), ...

Re: WGMZ to WCRZ (CARS 108)

That was Dick Bing announcing after Amazing Grace. Chuck Hill was the DJ for the first airshaft. I taped the first hour also. I don't know if this is from my tape, though I know I loaned the tape to Colonel Flagg, and he recorded it and took it down to Cincinnati and annoyed Chuck Hill with it a few...

Re: CCrane FM Transmitter 2

I should set up a rig like this one in central Traverse City with some Alt-Country. I could use one of Henderson's frequencies. Throw in some id's, sit back and see what happens. CK-722 WWPZ had that same transmitter in Petoskey, at least before the tower (without a lightning arrester) was struck. ...

Re: CCrane FM Transmitter 2

If by "probably technically" you mean "definitely absolutely." Funny thing, the same publications back then made you get a certificate signed by at least a Second Class Radiotelephone License holder to operate a crystal controlled 400 microwatt AM BC transmitter. Anyone know the power output, imped...
