Re: 101.9 wldr

Did WMKC ever broadcast on 102.3 or did they move before signing on?
As I recall, the application or CP was modified and there was an associated Petition for Rulemaking to change from 102.3 to 102.9. I don't think they ever operated on 102.3.

Re: WPON WCXI Updates - 2019

WCXI should have a decent daytime signal when it is actually built. Now they need a format. WPON has many nulls, but 15 Mile and Haggerty isn’t far from the transmitter in Milford Twp (I think it’s just past Charms Road (lined up with Napier for those to the south). I suspect that the signal will b...

Re: WPON WCXI Updates - 2019

WPON should have moved to the top of a building Daytime nondirectional with ~1 kW, as close as possible to the old TL near Square Lake and Telegraph, instead of just selling the site circa the early to mid 1980s.

Re: 101.9 wldr

Dave Schaberg and Jim McCluskey tried to put 280A 103.9 into Big Rapids WBZX was originally allocated to Harrison and moved into Big Rapids. The incumbent Big Rapids broadcaster did everything they could to prevent WBZX from getting licensed. The Schaberg McCluskey drop in was done around 1980. It ...

Re: Music squeeze on some stations

They should just do WCFL Mini Spins. Is the whole waveform digitally edited, or does it just close the gaps? Sometimes in the 1960s, they would speed it up and put the pitch in the cracks, as ~3% is a quarter step and drives musicians nuts, and the record company would release it that way to shave t...

Re: 101.9 wldr

Usually, an equivalent Class channel is required for substitution. 244A was substituted for 278C. Dave Schaberg and Jim McCluskey tried to put 280A 103.9 into Big Rapids back around 1980, but then WTCM-FM moved South to serve Cadillac better, and 272A 102.3 was substituted for 280A 103.9, and WAAQ s...

Re: 101.9 wldr

Maybe somebody remembers why they channel change occurred. Looking at both History Cards, the WLDR and WTCM-FM applications may have been mutually exclusive, and WTCM-FM changed channels to solve the mutual exclusivity. It looks like WTCM-FM signed on just seven months before WLDR, WTCM-FM on Decemb...

Re: WPON WCXI Updates - 2019

WCXI is on STA with 250 watts nondirectional from the Wixom area site. The LIC site is still in Fenton. Normally, they don't show the STA contours. I have heard nothing to the effect that the WCXI phasor or transmitter have been installed. The WCXI CP expires 2-15-20. Based on an 82.8 degree tower w...

The song is better than the reality. Every time I run into one, I regret ever hearing it.

Re: WWV Time To Turn The Clocks Back

I think the current CHU signal dominance on 3330 kHz has to do with the current propagation conditions and the fact that the transmitter is only 500 miles away, near Ottawa. When the WWV transmitter was in Beltsville, MD, it boomed in, even on crystal radios and low selectivity AM BC TRF receivers w...

Re: WPON WCXI Updates - 2019

1160 and 1460 are 30 miles away. I guess I have to finally buy some field strength meters to prove what I'm saying, instead of estimating based on other measurements I made in the past. And M-3 really overestimates it on this path. Looks like all the spares that were lying around to borrow are gone....

One of the first antennas that John Kraus built was to hear WWJ in Ann Arbor on a Crystal Radio.

Re: WPON WCXI Updates - 2019

1460 is stronger than it was, but it's still weak and you can still hear cochannel beats. I doubt that it's more than 0.5 mV/m at the very most in the major lobe.

Re: WWJ signal problems?

Might be the colder ground. Might be the skywave conditions. Daytime skywave has been very big lately though.

A low field ratio tower can have a profound effect on the pattern, just like a reradiating nearby tower. It can fill in deep nulls and even substantially increase major lobes.
