From radioinsight.com:

Quote:
Over in Muskegon MI, Will Tieman’s 93.1 WMPA Ferrysburg has registered Country931.com for the soon to launch station. Tieman, who is best known as the voice of Michigan State University basketball, also owns “Sportsradio 1370” WGHN and AC 92.1 WGHN-FM in Grand Haven.

I hope Mr. Tieman ultimately picks a more creative handle than "Country 93.1" for his new station. :x

I can picture some Arbitron ratings confusion occurring between this new station & B93.

i predict that once country 93.1 comes up, CC will flip formats for 107.9 WMUS, because its useless for Holland/Grand Haven/Muskegon to have 3 country stations Thunder 94.5, country 93.1 and 107.9 MUS

There's no way CC flips WMUS from Country. Nobody in a country format comes close to them in ratings in the Muskegon book, not even B93. In my opinion starting up another country station in an already country saturated market - and trying to play catch up to a heritage station - just doesn't make sense. WMPA would be better going after the AC market left open by the Star 108 demise.

WMUS is country music in Muskegon and has been for almost a half century. Even though they are now on a different frequency than before, to drop the format because a new start up is allegedly going country in Grand Haven would be sheer lunacy.

Agreed.

I think I see what you mean here. Have WGHN-FM be the soft AC/middle-of-the-road type station and program 93.1 WMPA as an upbeat, more contemporary AC.

I guess I figured we'd either see: i) the above scenario happen, ii) a new Oldies station, or iii) a new Variety Hits station. Hell, I even figured Smooth Jazz and Contemporary Christian were possibilities. Definitely wasn't banking on Country!

That being said, there's a chance a Country format could be semi-successful on that frequency if they keep it low budget and undercut WMUS' ad rates. I actually like the gold-based format Big Country 92.1 in St. Johns/Lansing grabs off the bird.

Country? You've gotta be kidding. No way WMUS does anything but country. And isn't 93.1 just a 6kw? Will that cover Muskegon and Ottawa counties completely with a city grade signal? Doubt it.

I was figuring oldies or .... I like MW's idea of switching WGHN back to soft AC and WMPA doing Hot AC, therefore monopolizing the AC spectrum for the Lakeshore. There's no one in Muskegon doing any form of AC, right? Except for that peashooter from Whitehall.

Maybe it's a smokescreen.

i realize now WMUS wouldnt flip to anything else

having 3 AC's in muskegon could work

92.1- Soft AC
93.1- HOT AC
97.5- Soft AC

During tonight's massive Indiana-Ohio tropo opening, I ran into WMPA at full blast //WGHN. It's on the air now. For those DXers out there though, it's still possible to get by it if the signals are strong enough. Had WMLY-LP Marshall in its null tonight.

I also heard 93.1 on the air this morning too. Simulcasting WGHN at this point. Signal was listenable on the northeast side of Grand Rapids, but not real strong. About same signal strength at 92.1, which makes sense, cause I believe their antennas are on the same tower.

It was pretty sweet (maybe I'll post my log in the DX section). FYI though: 105.7 and 104.1 actually went off the air, supposedly for maintenence. I had some folks who were closer to the tower confirm it. Nice timing though!!! I got the same stations at the time. It's easier for them to do maintenence during events like this when their signal is being slammed.

My furthest was 103.7 WFIU IN Bloomington, 299 miles with full TOH ID in for at least a half hour.

Could have done without 93.1 signing on though!
