WOAP seems to be playing more classic rock and fewer oldies of late. Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers, Eagles, Steve Miller Band, etc. are all great, but they just seem out of place on WOAP.

I like WOAP, and I like classic rock. But when I tune in to an "oldies" station, I want to hear oldies. I suppose they are trying to broaden their appeal, but I wish they would play more of the rare-er oldies tracks that no one else is playing, and only play the occasional classic rock track. Just sayin'...

Lord NO. Not turning classic rock. Broaden the appeal? Yes. Rare-er oldies? Yes, but the old rule of radio applies, unfamiliar will turn and not appeal. If you where listening during the request show, yes, we get a mix of calls. Drive time, there is a push at 5. Our library goes deep and wide. BTW, Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, etc have been played on WOAP for a long time now. So has Deep Purple, Focus, Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, etc. Still "classic rock-ish" songs but are also OLDIES. It's an interesting format none the less.. BTW, we do separate the classic rock-ish songs and are parted in hourly clocks.. just saying.. :)

Love to see that you are listening! (I rest my case judge!)

Glad to hear WOAP is staying "as is." We listen everyday, and I'm like 50 miles away in Fenton. Good strong signal regularly.

You have the most eccentric (and eclectic?) music mix out there. That's one of the things we listen for... and like. Just keep doing what you're doing... nobody else can do that. GREAT station, with Boomer and Sue and all!

Don't forget the Polka Hour on Saturday mornings! (I LOVED IT while on my way to Saginaw a few weeks ago...)

While I like WOAP the way it is and wouldn't change the way they do oldies. But one should never be afraid to play the rare -er cuts. This is oldies, which encompases a broad range of music. For every person who the unfamilyer doesn't appeal to there is a person that the overplayed cut doesn't appeal to also. The most overplayed song of all time Old Time Roch and Roll, if I hear it today, I do not want to hear it for another week. WGVU AM 1480 in Grand Rapids doesn't worry at all about playing the unfamilyer and they are doing very well. Playing the classic rockish songs with the other oldies is what attracted me to the station in the first place. Back when those songs were coming out the classic rockish was played along with whsat we consider typical oldies aswell as crossover country and "rythem and blues". Thats the most who were listening to it when it was new would like to listen to it now. Keep up the good work! Theres is only one thing I'd change. Boost your power to 5 grand, so I can get you better here in Grand Rapids.

I really enjoy those "Oh, Wow" cuts that I haven't heard in many years, and WOAP has given me a few (where else will you hear "Soul Coaxing" by Raymond Lefevre, or "Wait a Minute Here She Comes" by Tim Tam and the Turn-Ons?). And of course, many cuts belong in BOTH Oldies and Classic Rock playlists ("Hello, I Love You," "Ruby Tuesday," "Penny Lane," etc.). But in my opinion, the Eagles' "Take it Easy" just doesn't seem right for an Oldies playlist. Neither does "Reeling in the Years" by Steely Dan, "Jet Airliner" by Steve Miller, "Jesus is Just Alright" by the Doobie Brothers, etc. All are great songs, but not for that format. AGAIN...just my opinion.

True, and they are also Non Commercial, keep that in mind. Thanks Steff and I am glad you enjoy the station.. I wish we could jump up the power, well, we can, if we built out the CP but you would lose us there in GR.

Daytime, maybe not losing GR... check this out... (Boomer, do this... I could catch you in Kzoo daytime...)

Holy shit dude, that's a northerly lobe! Did you study at the University of Fetzer??? :hat

Also, is this the big change that's been milling around? Owosso would lose it's COL, if I'm not mistaken... plus there's a big null toward most of Shiawasee County...

Under the treaty between the US and Canada, the 0.5 mV/m contour of CHOK cannot overlap the 0.5 mV/m contour of WOAP. Domestic rules would suggest that the 0.25 mV/m of CHOK would not be allowed if it were a US station, and the 0.25 mV/m of WOAP and WKBZ cannot overlap the 0.5 mV/m of WKBZ and WOAP. That is the reason for the deep nulls.

There is no pattern which would increase service in all directions, or to serve the areas that WOAP now does and increase service in some directions except north.

If WOAP had an array south of Owosso, it could go Class B fulltime with a directional antenna, probably with at least four towers, with the nighttime major lobe to the north.

With all the noise, only an extremely dedicated DXer would be able to hear WOAP over the air in places like Kalamazoo, even with 50 kW. The Waverly facility would serve Lansing and points north.

Yes, this is one of the discussions that keeps coming up in meetings.

Here is the thing; if we where to build this out, the tower array would be in Waverly. We would then have to close up the Owosso facilities and relocate the studios closer to the Lansing area. We would not hit our 25 mile, legal studio rule staying in Owosso. So, as you can see, the costs would be very high all-in-all. Don't get me wrong, I can get real good deals on equipment and towers. The power bill alone would worry me at 50k day and 4.5k night.

We then would have to COL Lansing market and contend against the already over saturated market for revenue. Yes, the agency buys would rock our socks but local will be a challenge. Then I may actually have to hire more staff,m etc...

Either way, it is a consideration that we have been looking at. We are also looking at some other options that may be possible without having to move the station. We have 4 acres here in Owosso and could potentially build out in a different pattern and power level.

I have lived in Grand Rapids all of my life and have always been able to receive WOAP. I listen to them every day on the northeast side. Either in the house with my GE Super radio or in the car. Not real strong, but in my opinion it's listenable.

If it were directional north of Owosso where it is, the power would be very limited, most likely a few tens of watts, and still Class D. Protecting WTIC, KRLD, and the Class Bs to the south in between would not allow much power. If there were such a thing as a time machine, we could go back and tell the original owners to build the station south of Owosso, just in case the rules changed.

FTR this is the CP that Boomer is dealing with, not the actual footprint.
