If the Upper Peninsula seceded from Michigan and became it's own state (http://tinyurl.com/d6ts5nu), how would this affect the radio/television markets? Since pretty much all TV stations in Northern Michigan are duopolies, how would that play out? Would the duopolies cease to exist? I would hope duopolies would end as I am not a fan of that. I would think a state (UP) would be more concerned about its own news and happenings rather that news from another state (LP). Thoughts?

What a silly question. It wouldn't affect them at all. TV Markets can cross state lines. There are only about 5,000 examples. Let's see: Toledo, Cincinnati, Chicago, South Bend, Pittsburgh, Washington, Memphis, Kansas City, St. Louis, Erie, New York City, Philadelphia, Louisville, Boston, do I need to name any others?

Why on earth were you under the impression that an entire TV market must be contained within a single state?

I see your point, guess it was just wishful thinking on my part to get rid of the blasted duopoly. :rollin

Simple, no duopoly, no Soo stations. There is no money in the Soo.

because people in TVC/Cadillac are too lazy to seek advertisers in the U.P.

Other than the casinos and a couple car dealers...what advertisers? I mean the kind that can afford TV advertising. You can't run a TV station on a radio station budget.

Oh, heck, Bob....can't you see? It's a vast untapped market!

Suzy's Pasties in St. Ignace would be a major advertiser......the Toonerville Trolley keeps trying to buy ad time but just can't get on anyone's clock..... :rollin

It's a great region, but major attractions like Paradise can barely keep a hotel running. Becoming a state would simply line some up for a different bite at the welfare apple.

And, to quote a wise man:

Most places in the UP can't support that radio station budget!

Suzy's would have to buy more ads to counter the big campaign that Lehto's Pasties would have, and then Bessie's would get in on the action. JavaJoe would be right there with some big money ads too. Then Bentley's and Clyde's would have to pony up. By the end of the day a station could be rich ! :razz

Have you tried Joe's 'sister' operation, Jose's? I drove past the other day and noticed that they moved....the food was great in the old place.

The Cubs will win the World Series the same season the Lions win the Super Bowl and Indiana goes to the Rose Bowl before the UP becomes a state of its own.

The Cantina moved to the old "Steak and Seafood Palace" (was Dockside). The old Jose's Cantina will be a hotdog stand type place.

Don't forget Algoma Central Railroad. They would have a lot of ads for their 'Snow Train'.

Oh, and what about 'Taquamemenon Falls'? The Pictured Rocks? The trinket shop at Marquette Prison - Open to the Public?

And the most famous landmark of the UP: The channel 3 transmitter in the Hiawatha National Forest? I can see the ad now: "Come see our big stick in the Woods".

But this brings up another question: Would they stick with the Lions, or would they defect to the Green Bay Packers?
