Is that the Mike Kelly from Salt Lake City, pixelplay? That was the Mike Kelly at WFDF. I believe Bob Burchett is still with us. Norris Brannstrom (there are youtube videos from his high school musical days) passed away about 10 years ago. Noble Gravelin has been gone almost that long as I recall.

WJR is 90 ... and so is the average age of their listeners.

Arthur, the Michael Kelly I'm referring to was Mike Kelly at the Big 8 in the early-mid 1970s before he went to WCXI. I think he was originally from the east coast area or so. His funeral was in Philly and I recall he worked in the Albany, New York area before he went to CKLW. He was working in the suburban LA area before he got sick and passed.

I'm just guessing that Bob Burchett must be in his late 60s or early 70s now. He looked older than the other guys there then and that's 30 years ago.

This link tells you a lot of infomation about DJs. Bob Burchett was 37 in 1973, making him about 76 now. Bob worked at WCAR on weekeneds then, as Robert R. Morgan, then later at both WTRX and WDEE. Later he was at WCXI.

Joe Wade Formicola was also at WFDF in 1973.

I also believe WSPD Toledo is 90 years old in April of this year, but they too had other call letters at the start (WDAL??) and like all pre-war stations had to move from 1340 to 1370 in the early 40's and go directional per the treaty frequency move.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that they still have their original single free-standing omni as "Tower 1" as a part of a 3-tower directional arrangement, and somebody said they actually have (use) the original 1340 phasor?

CKOC in Canada (their first station, is still on the air on 1150)

Wow! That's like a time capsule, Arthur. There was another book out around then that had what DJs approximately made at different stations. It looked similar to this but was different and I think was geared to Top 40.

Apparently, working at both WTRX and WDEE was not an issue requiring a separate identity for Bob, as the signals don't overlap much. WFDF and WCAR overlap did require Bob to use "Robert R. Morgan". I think there was a similar issue for Terry Knapp/Knight. It wasn't a problem at WJBK, as he was one of the "Jack The Bellboys", though The Big 6 reached Detroit. I think it became a problem when Terry worked at The Big 8.

WFDF was Adult CHR or Hot AC in today's vernacular. Hard Album rock fans weren't their target audience. Women and men with more mature musical tastes listened though. Mellower formats have traditionally attracted a larger audience.

I heard absolutely no mention of their 90th Anniversary on WJR yesterday. Strange, as they had a H*** celebration on their 85th Anniversary.

Funny how soon they forget.

I have a very cool T-shirt from their 85th anniversary! (WJR) - but that's back when they had an owner that recognized heritage stations and call letters and gave a crap; Cumulus equals none of those ideals.

Their Facebook page mentioned it, but that's all.

Hey, wake up! It's the 50th anniversary of WCX (in Detroit). WJR (in Pontiac) didn't get authorized until August 20, 1925. And it wasn't until 1930 that right-wing bigot and hate monger G.A. Richards acquired both stations and started spewing hate speech, a tradition WJR now continues.

The Free Press, which owned WCX, wanted to promote its newspaper (as the News did with WWJ). Jewett Radio and Phonograph, which owned WJR, wanted to sell radios and realized you couldn't sell hardware (receivers) without available software (programming for people to listen to). Richards, a Buick dealer, wanted a propaganda vehicle to promote GM's corporate interests, corporate greed and the prejudices of the rich suits on the eighth floor of the GM building.
