Everyone fucked by Hanlon knew what kind of creature he was and chose to keep swimming.

WITH THAT SAID--a few thoughts for you guys--

I was fired--in 2005 while occupying #1 25-54 mornings at MMQ with Deb.

It was devastating--i was not ready for it and it knocked me for a loop..but i always knew the guy was NUTS and figured that move was just a matter of time...100k + talent in Lansing had a red laser dot on its head--and both Rich and I knew that...

There were so many rumors of Matt/Kelly N and blow..booze....rehabs...Hey nobodys perfect! No one ever knew the truth but them--but there were several Lansing saleschix that ended up in rehab and good for them..Hi Hillary !

I dislike him for many good reasons--not the least of which is because he was, in my opinion--incapable of telling even the most simple truth and so mired in sick, deep pathos that he was going to take lots of folks down who were dumb enough to believe his endless stream of shit---He saw himself--as a king maker or breaker and smarter than everyone--always. Not just arrogant--but CRAZY arrogant.

Anyone engaging in conversation was quickly schooled that he had a BMW --lived in Ada--and was king shit !

Perhaps the most nauseous exchange between two men I have witnessed in my life was Matt and Stryker one-upping each other regarding boat sizes ...hilarious...and so..SO sad. The only good news is that while these guys were jacking each other off--other guys were getting to their women-smart women--who had grown tired of antics... KNEW the "size of their boats" and oh how i loved that.

After sending errand boy Ray to fire me--MATT was VERY unhappy that I didnt just go away..he didnt understand that I was staying in the market, in radio or out. I have family and another income from my little agency--
Canning me was his choice--yet he complains of the result of his own action--- leave it to him to be unhappy that I was around..HILARIOUS!

Step one was no more Tim voice on any of his stations..My law client pays me to be his spokesman--and the ads were only going to play with my voice....so he instructed sales to turn down the buisness--way to watch the bottom line Matt! My client was approached directly--to his credit he stood by me--and declined another voice--

Second--MATT demanded Common Ground fire me as announcer and to show how serious he was he threatened to pull all his mightly stations off promotions and boycott the festival..not even mentions in the news!! Remember--i wasnt even back on air--I was just still in town! To the credit of Kevin and the CG folks..they told him to stuff it. He was shocked.
He boycotted CG that year--and spent money to have "common Grounds" coffee made up and distributed off site as well as fly an airplane around in the sky most of the week with Citadel stations call letters on it...pretty lame...

Attendance was up!!--Common Ground can live without big bad Citadel....and they were back the next year without the demand that I get tossed from the event that so many of us worked so hard on from day one---But talk about feeling NO LOVE---wow

Next--Matt demands that there will be NO buisness conducted with my ad agency--despite hundreds of thousands spent in the past from Liggett to Citadel--no more Barron money--period. Way to once again watch the bottom line Matt.

Then --he marches--with (chief sick-o-pant) Kelly into the offices of Celebration Cinema in GR and demands that since I am no longer recognised as an agency ( just by him-all other radio-tv-print and outdoor did) that i be dropped by them! It has been described as an interesting exchange--one man telling another how he will spend HIS money..none the less Matt threatens the Citadel/Celebration relationships in the Grand Rapids market as well as Kzoo area and Lansing..so its a tense situation indeed.

The issue was eventually resolved...thanks to an agency friend who placed the spots for me at Citadel--(thanks again Linda).and over time I saw my voice and agency return to Citadel now Cumulis...but.....

I SHALL NEVER FORGET the sick little pussy of a man who tried to take food off my table by reaching BEYOND radio and trying to destroy my ability to make a living in the town i love so--the man who tried so hard to kick me off the stage of a community event that he allowed let his stations and sales departments suffer--HE MADE IT PERSONAL and I wish him nothing but the worst..Sometimes ya just gotta tell a guy hes a cunt..and that my friends..is one sick puppy...

Nobody is around to tell the emperor his clothers are awesome..except his roomie--which is another hilarious story for another time...but with no money--no blow and no pals maybe he will just off himself...which would be fine with me..

My loving wife worried that media and where it takes you is so full of fuckers that I might follow in the footsteps of my peers--Ray who drank to death--JJ who ate to death--Marky..who's heart was broken by radio and was never the same after Hanlon fired him and ended up smoking and drinking himself to death in bars where he was once the cool radio guy--and then just the beer guy...Hey who knows..but I dont think so----What I do know is that the world without Matt--would be a better world...and I have the stripes to say that.

I would like to nominate Barron's above post as the greatest ever written on here. I know I slammed the GR board for their anger about Hanlon... but that is because they all came off as whiny. Tim puts it all out there, lays it on the table, and kudos to him for it.

Lansing radio is lucky to have Tim Barron.

I'm sure the big sports guy knows about this and more. I also understand that Hanlon sold his Ada home to the big sports guy, who still resides there.

Like I said in the GR section, I make it policy not to slam anyone on their personal problems, but just having read Tim's post, I will concur that Mr. Hanlon was a professional a-hole beyond comprehension. It's one thing to terminate someone's employment, but it's quite another to attempt to blackball that person's ability to make a living once they're no longer your employee, and doing so at the liability of your own company is nothing short of insane. I believe the appropriate term is cutting off our nose to spite your face. In Tim's case, it seems that Matt's personal power trip and ego-driven actions were not only potentially damaging to Tim, but to Citadel as well, and that just doesn't make sense.

Only one word...WOW!!!

Just the tip of the iceberg here.......very well said indeed.

Pieces of human garbage such as Matt Hanlon and Farid Sulemann certainly help explain why Shitadel was a failed company under their (poor) leadership.

BTW, I agree with the earlier post that Lansing radio is lucky to have Tim Barron, and likewise, I'm pleased to see he still checks out this site from time to time! Terrific insight from Mr. Barron earlier. I appreciate the time he took to make that post. If that recounting of events doesn't crystallize why MH is a scumbag, nothing will!

After all they are well aware of him. He wasn't allowed to enter WJR towards the end I was told. They despised him and rightfully so.
In the beginning dealing with WJRW he made alot of mistakes and over in Detroit they were pretty pissed.

I can verify nearly everything Tim posted. I was there. Nothing has been embellished.

Consolidation in all kinds of industries is selecting a group of tyrants in management like the one you describe. I don't know either Matt or Tim, but I hear more and more stories similar to this in many industries. But I wont name names. Ruining careers of good, established and respected people is one tactic. The truth is, you SHOULD be able to go across the street and work for a competitor when this happens. Monopolies DO sorely need to get busted up. Just don't know who will be Teddy Roosevelt this time around. In the meantime, kids need to get training in entrepeneurship from an early age, so they can easily start and run their own businesses and not have to deal with this kind of thing. I do see some promising signs where small business is taking radio and other businesses back, when the big "take it or leave it" guys can no longer figure out how to run it, and can't cut any more so called "fat" to make it appear temporarily profitable. Too often, cutting the "fat" is fatal, like a liposuction procedure gone horribly wrong.
