What the Canadian Governments cuts to the CBC means for us

(1) Some CBC television broadcasts will shut down their transmitters.
(2) The Shortwave service known as RCI will be scaled back rather drastically.
(3) CBC Radio Two will have commercials.
(4) Many of the Television programs will have to be done more cheaply, and the viewers will notice it.

Can anyone think anything else?

More and more people'll be sucking up to those cable/satellite operators as there's no other way?

Most Canadians get TV via cable or satellite, so shutting down transmitters won't affect them. Some local stations will become repeaters without local programming, but the cost of running an existing transmitter is miniscule compared to the total CBC budget.

RCI, and shortwave generally, is obsolete. The CBC is more available in more parts of the world on the Internet (audio streaming, on-demand and podcasts) than RCI ever was. No great loss. Pull the plug.

Radio One won't have commercials - yet. Look for something like US public radio's enhanced underwriting announcements on Radio One. As with US public radio, Radio One has an elite audience that corporate "underwriters" will want to reach.

The big cost saving in TV program production will come from fewer episodes (more re-runs) and from more programs from outside suppliers - independent producers and foreign broadcasters. If CBC really wants to play in the big leagues of TV programming, they will need to step up their game in selling programs outside Canada. CTV and even Global have been far more effective at doing this.

I can recall a time in the 80's when a few shows that aired on CBC only showed up on premium channels.

The CBC currently has programming online for streaming, however it cannot be viewed from outside Canada...unless of course your using a proxy. I think it would be to the CBC's advantage to open up their programming outside of Canada, including their streaming content. What I never understood is why here in the USA we can watch CBC programming on TV but not via the internet from CBC's website.

From what ive just read , kinda looks like the end of the road for one long time CBC stallworth..HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA

That's the best we could help for, though it would be nice if they let Americans in on it at least.

More or less the luck of living close by to a CBC station if that's the only reason we get it on cable. I suppose it could be like the reserve of the American broadcast networks up in Canada on cable that come from particular cities in the US that are used throughout.

Not to mention that there are still parts of this world where the internet is expensive, unreliable and/or unavailable. While most industrialised countries have wide availability of internet, there are many poorer countries where they're not as widely available. Also, in countries such as China and Cuba, the internet is more easy to censor and block than jamming an internet signal.

Some CBC Television material is available outside of Canada via various sources, including its official YouTube channels (the latter is where I get my CBC News fix). Though I imagine some shows, especially sports and programs / movies that the CBC doesn;t own themselves get blocked outside of Canada.

As much of the CBC's programming is either produced in-house or by another production company FOR the CBC, I don't see any problem with streaming its television programming outside of Canada, other than for sports and any programming not owned by or produced for the CBC.

The CBC used to be a leader back in the 1980s with international sales of its shows, such as "Degrassi Junior High", "The Edison Twins" and "Anne of Green Gables" -- why can't they go back to that again? Since the 1990s, it seems that, just like Las Vegas, whatever happens on the CBC stays on the CBC.

From Wednesday's Windsor Star...CBC will cut 34 local news jobs nationally. It's not known yet how, or if, Windsor will be affected...
