I am picking up the same sports broadcast in Spanish on AM 600, AM 670, and AM 710. All three signals are fading in & out, but AM 600 seems to be strongest of the three. Could these be Cuban stations?

AM 670 certainly is. They often swamp the Score from Chicago.

600, 670 and 710 are all on the Cuban Radio Rebelde network // 5025 on short wave. Rebelde can also be heard on 1180 under WHAM.

when I moved to Fort Myers, Fla., in 1980, Radio Moscow on 600 AM was by far the loudest signal on the dial. Broadcasts were in English, 24/7.

Indeed. The announcers didn't have much of an accent, bit occasionally you'd hear one. Constant reports of all the glorious stuff happening behind the Iron Curtain; constant anti-American screeds, usually without any basis in reality. It was "fun" to listen to.

Should WSNL be concerned?

David Gleason, formerly Executive Vice President of Univision, has a lot of knowledge on this subject. As I recall, he said that parts were very difficult to find for the powerful 150 kW transmitters the Cubans were using from the Soviet Union, and that the transmitters were rarely operating at anywhere near full power. Occasionally, the transmitters were fixed, causing deliberate havoc to US stations, particularly in Florida. Hey, if WSNL is getting interference from the Cuban station, you MIGHT be able to apply for an increased power STA at night, if the phasors can handle it. Some stations in Florida have been operating with more power on STA for DECADES because of Cuban interference. They would probably have to get blanket authorization for all stations on the frequency though, if they were to authorize stations this far north. In many cases though, the interference is caused by unusual propagation conditions. The recent solar flare and related Aurora Borealis is likely to be causing this effect. BTW, Shawn Malone has some beautiful pictures online of the Aurora taken near Marquette over the last few years.

Too bad I haven't gotten out at night to notice.

The cold war era. The golden age of short wave broadcasting. I loved it. Would that those days were with us again. Today we have the best receiving gear ever made. Stuff we couldn't even have dreamed of back then. Sadly, there's nothing left to listen to.

We must make our choice. We may have democracy, or we may have wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, but we can’t have both.

Seems that way (worst I find myself doing is watching RT, France 24, CCTV News and Al Jazeera and think I'm getting the best).
