Escanaba really lacks a decent rock station. 93 Rock from Iron Mountain is about the only rock outlet available to that area, but has a very weak signal in many parts of town.

I thought Real Rock 95-5 could be heard fairly well in Escanaba; am I mistaken?

Your not mistaken. I can pick 95.5 up very well like a local station sometimes.

95-5 is spotty here in Gladstone, just like 93.

I was a bit surprised when I zoomed by Mix's frequency about a month or so ago, only to hear Hard Drive XL, and a Razor 94-7 liner...got excited thinking that maybe they would do a simulcast, but I never heard it again, so...

As far as the station went, I hadn't listened for a long time, as the Classic Hits format was never my particular brand of vodka, and I am also an imaging junkie, so that made it hard to listen to as well. I can't help but notice that I hear the Pop/Rock mix going on a lot more frequently in recent years...makes me feel a little warm & fuzzy knowing that what we were doing 12 years ago might've had legs after all. Also nice to see that there are still a few that remember what it was like then...a lot of heart & soul went into making that station unique...too bad.

I just bought a new Sangeon radio or actually my Parents bought it for me for my birthday and the things has a H*** antenna that goes 4 feet high. I put that thing up to it's max and I can pick up 95.5 real rock from Traverse city like a local station here in Escanaba. I can also pick up KHQ, Z93 from Cadillac, 101.9 a country station from TC and 97.5 WKLT. WKLT comes in so good on my radio that my radio actually identifies the station as KLT and so does Green Bay's WIXX. On my new radio I was actually able to pick up Z 93.3 out of Midland Michigan and 94.5 the moose comes in alot as well. 98.5 WUPS has it's moments up here where that comes in clear too.

WTCM-FM should come in quite well up there as it is stronger than any of the TC stations. I'm surprised you can pick up Sunny Country up there. It's very spotty along the M-55 corridor between Manistee and Cadillac.

You were hearing Razor 94-7's translator, which transmits from a location several miles south of Green Bay. Pretty amazing that you were able to hear what amounts to a 250 watt station so far away!

I strongly doubt Woodward needs a fill-in translator for Razor because of coverage issues. My guess is the station came on the air around the time 106.7 flipped to Mainstream Rock (or possibly later when they were Modern Rock). Woodward wanted channel surfers tuning away from WAPL to land on Razor first as opposed to Cumulus-owned 106.7.

Is 93 Rock (93.5 FM) from Green Bay audible in the Esky area frequently, or is that one a seldom catch?

I was picking up Razor loud and clear on the Mackinac Bridge this past weekend (it even tripped RDS). Active rock isn't my cup of tea but Razor is very good at what it does.

<<According to Radio-Locator their license expires October 1. Should be interesting to see what happens in the next two months.
http://radio-locator.com/info/WMXG-FM>>

Getting very close to October and passing through area yesterday: NOTHING.

What a far cry from the Top40/Rock format, jingles, liners and live jocks they had on day one years ago. How very sad. Everything planned, thought of, applied, the sweat, hopes, dreams, about to be shot down?

If 106.3 is deleted, then can other stations upgrade their power (106.7 in IM moving frequencies and bumping power up)?

Has a license renewal been filed?

They have filed for renewal, and have a valid STA to remain silent.

They're legal and licensed for the time being, The STA is good for six months, so the next deadline would be for the STA extension on December 20th. The first extension is usually granted without any pushback. However, they have until April 26, 2013 to sign back on or their license automatically expires. Some people game the system by signing on for a few days, filing to lift the STA and then going silent again under a new STA.

My guess is that they'll hang on to it until they find a buyer, rather than simply letting the license lapse.

So now it's almost March and this thing is still dead in the water.

Now what happens? For sale?

I was up in Esky staying with a friend 13 years ago (seems like yesterday). He was (and still is) the PD for WCMM, and had previously worked for WDBC/WYKX, so I got to tour both places (they're literally across the street from one another). We had a mutual friend who was working for MIX 106, so we saw the storefront studio. Also got to go to a Casino remote for Kool 105, where John Schneider and Tom Wopat were appearing with the General Lee. Oh, and my friend also gave me my first introduction to kayaking in the bay, which was a blast!

From what I saw, Mike Daniels and RRN have a great operation up there. Mike has managed to maintain what he and Tim Moore put into motion from the early days of Magic 97, which was patterned after the original 106 KHQ. They could certainly give any stations downstate a run for their money!

1. The license is turned in to the FCC, allowing other nearby stations to upgrade
2. It becomes a noncommercial station

3. They sign on for a short period of time - resetting the clock - then filing for a new STA.
